To Spay Or Not To Spay That Is The Question

All of my dogs have been spayed at 6 months of age. I've never had any problems with them gaining weight.

Definitely spay! This way, the dogs will avoid greater risks of health problems, and you will never have to worry about unwanted babies. Do it out of principle - there are SO many babies in shelters, way more animals than there is space. And often, it's caused by accidental breeding. It's very sad - those poor animals.

Another vote for yes.. please spay. Not only is it the right thing to do (how many unwanted pets are in shelters in the US??? Dont know the number but it is astounding. My sister has a mini Snahauzer 7.5 years old and never spayed her due to my sister always putting it off "we can't afford it right now" etc etc. (She never got pregnant) Well, she got pyometra 2 months ago and if my sisters' daughter would not have noticed she was in pain and they took her to the vet and vet showed them pictures of her uterus so infected and enlarged that vet said right there,,emergency spay now or put her down. This ended up costing them over 1,000 dollars as appossed to the 200.00 or so it would have cost back when she should have had it done! (I kept harping on the sister of mine to have her spayed, health risks, etc etc but to know avail.) Anyway, Penny-Girl (the mini-schna) looked so pitiful for days after that surgery, but she came through and she is back to her old chubby self now, and I am so happy she made it through. My AprilLove is due to be spayed on the 25th, yes I am scared (she is so small) but she will have the pre blood work screening and isoflourane for anesthesia.

Coco is getting spayed on Friday. I have been nervous about her having surgery especially because she is only 5 lbs but I know that her getting spayed is what is best for her.

My husband read an article today that said that after getting spayed Yorkies have been shown to gain weight, have change in the hair texture (it gets curly and kinky) and they have personality changes after they are fixed. I love my little girl just the way she is and I would hate if she was a different puppy after but I just want to do what is best for her. Has anyone else ever experienced this or heard of drastic changes in the dogs afterwards??

all my dogs are spayed and neutered and only my big golden is chubby and that's because she won't exercise! haha nothing to do with being spayed lol she's just lazy! but when I had harley neutered nothing changed.. except for the view of his rear end.. Neuter really is cuter! lol

there are always rumors that spaying/neutering your pets "change" them but in my experience with over 11 dogs I've had in my life.. no issues, no changes. they still stay the same size, same hair and same personality

Oh yea, and at the shelter I work at every animal is spayed/neutered as soon as they enter our facility and no changes there either.

Thanks that makes me feel better. Due to all the rumors about what happens to them after, we have ths image of us bringing one dog and taking home another. I know she will be fine. Thanks for the reassurance!

Although I am a VERY nervous Mommy right now since one of my little (only 3.8 lbs) furbabies is getting her procedure TODAY, I vote for spay/neuter! Especially since you're not planning on breeding. I have read way too many posts and puppies for sale articles from accidental and unplanned breedings.

If you're not breeding, then spay. There will be some weight gain but that's better than accidental males coming into your yard and accidental matings. You'll have less mess to take care of (every 6 months or so) and the bitc*iness that comes with their cycles.

Coco is recovering from getting spayed today. Poor little thing is so lethargic but she is doing well. I know that it was the right thing to do and now that it is over I am much more relaxed. It is so scary leaving my little baby there for surgery. Knowing her she will be running around the place before we know it but for now she is just trying to figure out how to move around with the cone on her head!

Awe! What a poor little girl! She's looks too pooped to be a puppy at the moment! hehe Good job on making the right decision! Oh, and try and keep her calm and quiet for a couple days so she won't disturb her stiches or anything. Does she have disolvable stitches or reg. ones?
