| HELP!!! Possible underbite and roachback??? Hi everyone!...Ok...So when I brought Lola to the Vet's @ 5months I was told she is great and very healthy by my Veterinarian. I was so pleased, and I called her breeder to praise her. I was so pleased to know that I have another happy and healthy pup in the family. Lola is now 9 months, and just had her first heat. I brought her again to the Vet's and we noticed that she has a slight underbite and the Vet believes she may be developing a roachback, but that he is not sure yet. I am to bring her again Fri to run some tests etc, if I decide. Now the underbite issue, is it a 100% genetic thing? Or could it be that her palates are still growing and forming and that the bottom has grown and the top hasn't yet? Because @ 5 months she had a beautiful scissor bite. I am not sure, so I did call her breeder. She says she never heard of the term Roachback but that she will fully support Lola's condition if in fact she does stay with an underbite and does develop a roachback. Which I am glad to hear. Also, the Vet said I should bring her back after she turns a year because by this point she is considered to have reached her adult structure. May she need some teeth pulled? Has anyone experienced this? Anything at all. I have done research and I have found these are genetic defects, if in fact they appear to be Lola's final structure. If this is the case, the breeder has agreed to refund me money because she is no longer "breeder quality" and is now "pet quality." and that she will pay for her to be spayed. Either way I love Lola and will not be getting rid of her or giving her back to the breeder and she will be spayed if this is the issue. Please reply with any helpful, friendly, and considerate information. Any suggestions, help, similar experiences???? Thanks alot!

Donating YT 14K Club Member | Roached backs and incorrect bites are genetic. You can have two perfect parents that will produce pups with this. However, you would have known before 9 months of age if she was indeed roached. Judging by your pictures, she has a level topline. Dogs that are nervous...like going to the vet or getting a bath...will roach up to some degree. My Gracie HATES getting baths and will roach up each time yet her topline is absolutely perfect on every other occasion. If you bought her for breeding purposes then yes, the breeder should refund part of your money...the cost of the spay, at least. If she has extra teeth, then this could have caused her bite to become incorrect. If that's the case, it's possible that her underbite is YOUR fault. Extra teeth can ruin a perfect bite...that's why it is essential that you get extra teeth extracted around 6 months when most people do their spay/neuters. I went to a breeder that showed me a little girl of around 8 weeks. This little girl had an underbite and a roached back and you could tell already. I passed on this little girl. Like I said, by the pictures, her topline is fine and like I said, with extra teeth, that can throw a bite (especially since you said it was slight), and therefore the breeder is not obligated to refund any of your money.

| reply Thank TXShopper for your help. It is a slight underbite, and we are going to the Vet's again Friday to see if it possible to correct this. Hopefully this is the case. If it's unable to be corrected, but we determine that it was my fault for not pulling extra teeth (however when I brought her to the Vet's @ 5months I do not see why he wouldn't have determined this and asked me about it), then I may still breed her, because it was not a genetic defect. Either way thank you so much. Do not take offense to this but if anyone else has any other similar experiences, opinions, etc etc please feel free to let me know. Thanks again!!!

Roached backs are just curvatures in the spine. Their shoulders are down and will have a low tail set and the middle will curve up. http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/sho...hlight=roached

| Hi...Thanks!!! I am guessing her topline is fine, because it only seems to 'roach' when she is uncomfortable or something like that. However, the underbite is my biggest concern right now. Iam praying it corrects itself or that it was my fault for not having some of her extra teeth pulled. I was hoping to atleast breed her once before getting her spayed. Either way she is here to stay and something will be worked out with my breeder, if the situation is genetic. Thank you all really. Has anyone ever had 'bite' issues that resulted in a negative way? and what did you do? Or has anyone has 'bite' issues that corrected themselves or proved to not be genetic and how? what happened? Thanks again!
