BANNED FOR NOT MAILING PRODUCTS PURCHASED | I Contacted Hill's Science Diet.... Ok, I went right to the source to try to find out why they add corn to there formula since everyone here was saying how bad it is for them. In no way am I trying to start a argument, I am just trying to get the facts so I can feed my baby a healthy diet. I do have a pdf. file from them that explains corn and why they add it, so if anyone is interested in that I can email it to you, send me a email and I will forward it to you. yougetthesmiles@yahoo.com Missy Dear Melissa : Thank you for visiting HillsPet.com and contacting us with your question. Your interest in our company and our products is greatly appreciated. The ground corn we use is the entire kernel that has been milled and ground consistently to the size of ground coffee. It provides an excellent source of protein, fat and carbohydrate. In this form it has been shown to be very digestible. The processed corn we use is more digestible than the fresh corn we humans normally eat. Cereal protein when mixed with animal protein or supplemented with certain amino acids is just as good as meat protein. Vegetable fats such as that found in ground corn are an excellent source of unsaturated fatty acids. Please find additional information attached for your review. We appreciate you taking the time to contact us. If you have any further questions or comments, please do not hesitate to call our Consumer Affairs Department toll free at 1-800-445-5777 or visit HillsPet.com. Sincerely, Deann Jurgensmeier Senior Dietary Management Consultant Consumer Affairs |

| That is very interesting. I didn't know that milled corn can be considered a protein source. I guess that explains why lots of brands use it as their first ingredient, cause corn is certainly much cheaper than using a true meat protein source. As long as your dog isn't allergic to corn, it doesn't sound necessarily like a bad thing. (also not trying to start a debate here) For those with picky eaters who prefer the "lesser" quality brands, might provide some ease of mind. P.S. Missy, you have been providing very good information here!!

| I'm not convinced that corn is a complete protein. I don't know how much different canine digestion is from humans, but for humans, I believe that corn and beans together make up a complete protein, but corn is not a complete protein in itself. Maybe there's a bean product in Hill's that combines with corn to make up a complete protein, but if that were the case I think the letter would have said so. Of course, I could be totally wrong. |

| I'm glad you posted this, because we all wonder, don't we? I asked google and this is one answer google gave me (I sure don't know myself ). Also, this is just a part of the article. You can follow the link below what I extracted to read all of it. These fats are sprayed directly onto dried kibbles or extruded pellets to make an otherwise bland or distasteful product palatable. The fat also acts as a binding agent to which manufacturers add other flavor enhancers such as digests. Pet food scientists have discovered that animals love the taste of these sprayed fats. Manufacturers are masters at getting a dog or a cat to eat something she would normally turn up her nose at. Wheat, Soy, Corn, Peanut Hulls, and Other Vegetable ProteinThe amount of grain products used in pet food has risen over the last decade. Once considered filler by the pet food industry, cereal and grain products now replace a considerable proportion of the meat that was used in the first commercial pet foods. The availability of nutrients in these products is dependent upon the digestibility of the grain. The amount and type of carbohydrate in pet food determines the amount of nutrient value the animal actually gets. Dogs and cats can almost completely absorb carbohydrates from some grains, such as white rice. Up to 20% of the nutritional value of other grains can escape digestion. The availability of nutrients for wheat, beans, and oats is poor. The nutrients in potatoes and corn are far less available than those in rice. Some ingredients, such as peanut hulls, are used for filler or fiber, and have no significant nutritional value. http://www.fluffie36.blogspot.com/
