| Growth I know y'all are sick of weight and growth questions, but I am getting kinda worried. So, when we got Mia at 9 weeks she was 3.3 lbs. When she was weighed at 12 weeks, she was 3 and 3/4 lbs. Now she is 14 weeks and she doesn't seem to be growing much at all. I tried weighing her. I got on the scale, then I got on the scale with her, then subtracted one from the other. It says she is exactly 3 lbs. So, my question is, does this sound normal? Shouldn't she weigh more by now? She sure doesn't seem any bigger. Her hair is growing, and she seems slightly longer, but not any bigger. Do Yorkies go through growth spurts and then stop a while? Or, are they supposed to grow consistently? I just want to make sure that I am not doing something wrong, and that Mia is normal and fine. Maybe I am just worrying for no reason. I just want her to be a very healthy pup. I'd appreciate any input. Thanks.

| Mine have all went through growth spurts. At first they did not gain anything or very little, maybe an ounce or two and then they would have a growth spurt and grow real fast and then either they would finally stop or they would have one more growth spurt. As long as they are gaining weight then they will be alright. The only thing you have to worry about is if they lose weight. It sounds like yours is losing weight which is not suppose to happen. If she is losing weight then you need to take her to vet right away to see why she is losing weight.

| Imo... I think all puppies grow at different rates, and you can never really tell for sure how they'll end up (sometimes the size of their parents isn't even an accurate gauge). I wouldn't worry about the growth rate of your puppy - as long as she is eating well. She may have had her growth spurt early and has kindof plateaued, I bet she'll have another one around 5mths of age, and then plateau again. As far as I know, growth usually slows down when they are about 6mths old and they reach their full size by about 7 or 8mths (but can continue to grow up until 2 years of age I've heard). Smaller pups max out earlier than bigger pups. Your pup will probably start gaining again -she's just growing at her own rate. If your puppy is at a healthy weight for her size, you should be able to feel her ribs slightly on both sides - if you can feel them a lot as well as feel her hipbones and spine really well, then she may be underweight (if you can't feel anything at all, she's overweight).

| It sounds like you are comparing the vet scale weights with your home scale weight. Scales can give different weights. Yorkies seem to grow in spurts and then stay the same weight until another growth spurt hits. If she is eating well isn't vomiting or having diarrhea, and she has a thin layer of fat over her ribs (you should be able to feel her ribs with a light touch, but not see them) I'm sure she's just fine. If her ribs are really bony or you are having any other health problems, I would take her in for a check up. |
