Help Out an Owner with a Sick Yorkie! mrchevy51 emailed me this and perhaps someone out there will have some idea on what to do? My little Foxy had puppies in April. (Six puppies but lost one) Got so sick I almost lost her. She bloats up with fluid and won't eat. Have had her to 4 vets who never heard of her situation. Had exploritory surgery a week ago and all they found was that her liver was swelled up twice the size it should be but the color was good and didn't looked diseased. Sent off a biopsy of the liver and intestines, no results yet. Hopefully tomorrow. Took 1 liter of fluid off her during surgery. She is bloated up again after only one week. I guess the next step is an ultra sound on her heart. EKG showed nothing. Blood tests were normal. Heartworm negative. Never had a sick day in her life until the pups were born. Had her fixed and the vet said the uterus was full of bacteria when he took it out. HELP!!!! Any information??? She has been sick since April and I'm almost ready to say she's had enough because I feel so sorry for her. All I do is cry when I have to give her a pill or change her bandages from her surgery. She's only 2 yrs. old and the best dog. She doesn't deserve this. She is so weak that I have to carry her most places and she staggers when she goes outside. Any information will be appreciated. Thank You.

Where dies mrchevy live? If he is on the east coast, I would suggest taking the dog to Angel Memorial Hospital in Boston. Or having the vet talk to doctors there. Also, Cornell has an excellent veterinary school where experts might want to help. If he is on the west coast or elsewhere, look for the closest veterinary school and call them for help. Often they will take an avid interest in unusual cases and may even being doing research in something that might help. At least try calling one of these super vet hospitals as they may be able to suggest a specialist near you, mrchevy. So, so sad. Our hearts and prayers go out for you and the little mother.

called my vet today he asked me to forward this mesege to him so I did. his first question was if the uterus was infected with pyrometrea and if they had tested her urine. I will let you know what he says after reading the post as son as I hear from him. Cindy

Here is mrchevy51's reply: --- Hi. I went to the vet today and he said that the place that is doing the biopsy called and said that there was a definate liver problem but they weren't sure just what as yet. They are still testing. Hopefully will have an answer this week. Thanks to all who wrote and tried to help in some way. I am so thankful for any information I can get as this is my first Yorkie and I don't know a lot about them. I just know that she depends on me to keep her in good health and I have done that for the last 2 yrs. Now it seems to her that I'm not keeping up my end of the bargin. I will keep fighting every day for her though. I live in Michigan. I might have to try some of the teaching schools as suggested. Thanks again to all who responded.

Liver Problem There is something called "Ascites" that is associated with liver problems. This is taken out of a book I have. Ascites is the accumulation of fluid in the abdomen. In liver disease, it is caused by low serum protiens and increased pressure in the veins that supply the liver. A dog with ascites has a swollen or bloated look. Thumping on the abdomem produces a dull flat sound.
