| roach back? does anyone know where I can find a photo of this? I have an idea what it looks like but I have a suspicion that Tootie has it and I am just not sure. I know that his back bone curves strangely, especially when he goes potty... any help would be appreciated! Donna

| A “roach back” is caused by the front legs being shorter than the rear, making her back curve instead of a straight line. I wouldn’t use the potty position as a guide though, lol. You can tell just by looking at them standing.

| is it all the time standing, or just occasionally? sometimes when I look at him he looks straight and sometimes he looks almost like he has a "hunch back".. he appears totally healthy, I was just wondering what this really is Thanks! Donna

| mmmmmmm.... Maybe... Donna, I just went to Tootie's Dogster page, and I looked hard at the last picture. It's hard to tell if he is a bit humped, or maybe it's the way his fur grows at the top of his back. Or it could just be because he is standing on an uneven surface. If you could try to get pictures from the side standing on a level surface, it would help to see his top line. Either way, I don't think a roach back is a medical problem. It just won't get him any ribbons in dog shows. If he's your pet, you will love him just the same. Wosie's front legs are shorter than her back legs, and she has an overbite so her tongue hangs out. She's my cutie patootie anyhow! She is also spayed and I would never have bred her anyway. Standard faults do not matter when you love your pup as much as we do!!

| Jaspersmom, I have a question on the "roach back". this is hereditary, and the dog should not breed is that a true statement?? I made the mistake of purchasing a 2 1/2 year old and looking at the pictures sent to me, I never saw his profile. Once he arrived and I saw him, yup you guessed it, he has a "roach back".. He is cute, weighs only 2.5 lbs. and has very long hair....... |

| I would ask a breeder... Quote:
************* Body Well proportioned and very compact. The back is rather short, the back line level, with height at shoulder the same as at the rump. ****************** IMO I would not chance breeding a roach back if I cared about bettering the breed. Sorry, honey.
