My poor baby!!

Tucker has major chewing issues, on himself!! Once he gets going he just can't stop. It's like at random he breaks out in itchies and chews so bad he gets scabs. I feel so bad, but we had to put a muzzle on him so we could apply medicine without him licking it off.

Isn't that a pitiful face?? I wish I knew what else to do, he seems so miserable!

If this is a year around problem, have you tried switching to a lamb and rice diet since it could be related to food allergies?

Have you tried a "calming aid"?

Reuger was biting his paws really bad. I took him to the vet and he was put on medicine, but then I read on here about corn allergies. Well, Reuger had been going outside and eating the dog food out there and, sure enough, it had corn in it. Once I took it away from him it only took three or four days and he had almost quit biting his paws. You might want to check your dog food and see if it has corn in it, if it does you may have found your problem. BTW, he only took meds for a couple of weeks and I couldn't tell that it helped one bit.

I wish it was a food allergy, if it was only that simple. But Tucker has a liver shunt and his food cannot be changed. His surgery to correct this is in a few weeks, I am extremely nervous, but hopefully after that we can get his skin taken care of. He just seems so sad and irritated, I feel bad for him

I'm so sorry to hear that. I'm guesing that the skin condition is related to the liver problem and once he has the surgery everything will clefar up.

I wish him well and a speedy recovery.

While you are deciding on anything else give that baby some Benedryl now.

How much do you think? He is about 12 lbs. I have no idea on dosage. Thanks for the tip, he's so sick of wearing a cone or muzzle off and on.

Gizmo weighs 11.something pounds and I give him 1/2 teaspoon of BABY Benedryl when he rolls around in fresh cut grass and it helps. I've heard you could go with 3/4tsp. if its bad enough. You can also get him some Bendryl cream and rub it in real well. (Not the clear greasy kind, the white cream). I would start with a half a teaspoon, it won't hurt him and call your vet to see about another dose if it doesn't help..or maybe another antihistamine altogether.

Ok, thanks. I'll give my vet a call just to be sure, Tucker's got a liver shunt so we have to be careful what meds or food he gets. But that's a great idea, I'm going to check into it. We had him on Prednisone for awhile, but I know it's not good for long periods of time so we are just using first aid cream to stop the scabs from hurting him so he will leave them alone.

The antihistamine (Benedryl) will help the itching and help him not chew himself into scabs.

I would check with the vet because of the liver shunt, but the range of benadryl dosage is .5 - 2 mg. per pound every 8 - 12 hours. So I would probably start at 1 mg per pound which would be about 1 tsp. of baby benadryl (double check I think it is 12.5 mg per 5 ml (1 tsp). twice a day. If he's that itchy, it wouldn't surprise me if your vet tells you to give him the max., a 25 mg. tablet twice a day. If it works (and it does for many) it would be much better than the prednisone.

Mitzi has the itches too and I don't like to put all kinds of medication on or into her. But for some reasons it helps her when she wears a soft t-shirt (I make them out of my old white t-shirts.) She scratches much less. As of chewing her paws it helps her washing them with clear water several times a day, especially after she went outside (I'm using flitered tub water.) Our Vet recommended Physoderm as a shampoo and that keeps the itching down too.

Hopefully your little big boy can get better pretty soon! It is so heartbreaking when we can't help them right away...

Thanks for all the tips guys! Right now he has a cone on (which he actually enjoys and uses as a weapon on Tripp- lol) and some medication. The scabs are on the inside of his hide legs so T-shirts wont really stop him from chewing. I'll try that shampoo though, thanks again!
