| A spayed question Chloe is now almost 6 months actually days away from it. She was going to get spayed but i felt she was too young still. Some people o know say they should get their first period before they get spayed to prevent cancer and some other say now is a good time as long as all her teeth are out. What is the best thing to do in this situation?? |

| I think you can wait a little longer. Maybe a couple of months. Lola was scheduled at 6 months, but due to circumstances beyond my control we postponed until almost 8 months. I think you have some time. Ask your vet.

| I got Holly done a few weeks ago at 6 months, and the relief is great! No more worry about when to do it! She was very well looked after at our vets and recovered quickly. Now we can start Obedience training without worrying about her going into heat! Just make sure you get the blood tests prior and pain relief after. They also put Holly on a drip as a precaution as she is small-only 1.5kg when spayed! I spent so many nights worrying about this and it went really well!

| My vet will spay/neuter any dog as long as it's at least 2lbs. They suggest having it done prior to their first heat, because allowing them to go into heat can increase the risk of mammary cancer and uterine infections.... (I've found information stating having it done prior to their first heat reduces the risk by about 96%. I can search for it again if you're interested). The only arguement I've heard for allowing one heat cycle is it helps them reach maturity. Since my vet and I both felt it wasn't necessary for her to go through a heat, Pixie was spayed when she was about 5 1/2 months old. You probably could wait another month or two until all her adult teeth have come in. That way you could have any retained baby teeth removed at the same time. |

Phantom Queen Morrigan Donating Member | i think you should get it done before her first heat. i used to be a vet tech and from what i heard every heat you let her go into increases sher chance of getting breast cancer later in life. after two heats her chances increase by FIFTY PERCENT. that's way too big of a risk for me to take with my girl so she is going in at 6 months no matter what |

| To receive the greatest health benefits you should have her spayed before her first heat. With every heat her chances of getting uterine cancer, etc. go up. |
