My vet will spay/neuter any dog as long as it's at least 2lbs.
They suggest having it done prior to their first heat, because allowing them to go into heat can increase the risk of mammary cancer and uterine infections.... (I've found information stating having it done prior to their first heat reduces the risk by about 96%. I can search for it again if you're interested).

The only arguement I've heard for allowing one heat cycle is it helps them reach maturity.

Since my vet and I both felt it wasn't necessary for her to go through a heat, Pixie was spayed when she was about 5 1/2 months old.

You probably could wait another month or two until all her adult teeth have come in. That way you could have any retained baby teeth removed at the same time.
