The tick dies as it bites. It's not a repellant. . . from what I understand from my vet the repellents that you can use are more toxic to your pet. Basically the tick just bit her, died, and you found it before it fell off. Also it kills the eggs of ticks and fleas, so eventually your yard should become clearer and clearer of ticks do to the fact that they can't feed on your doggie. My vet was telling me ticks are very difficult because they are so hardy that they can survive almost any repellent or poison unless it's in a dose to kill an animal. Also my vet suggested both Frontline Plus and Advantix. He said both of these products work the same way!!! The tick has to bite before it dies. He said for people that have a flea and tick problem he suggests advantix -- since he thinks it's superior with fleas. For those with primarily a tick problem he suggests Frontline Plus. I researched, and it looked like the products were comparable in price also. I decided on Frontline Plus because we have horrible ticks with the two acres out back, but I've never (knock on wood) seen a flea on any of my animals.

Normally during the summer, I will find one or two a month on my Yorkie-poo, Max, while giving him his bi-weekly bath. I'm happy to say that the ticks are always dead, so Frontline seems to be working.

When my daughter was just a few months old -- I took her for a stroll in the park, and when I came home I was horrified to see a tiny tick on the back of her tiny little arm. Lol, I remember being so mad at this little creature I wanted to kill it painfully, but I also wanted to keep it to take to our pediatrician 'just in case'. So I put it in this tiny little air tight jar to suffocate. . . Weird, I never had a reaction like that to bugs until I found one on my baby! I was a tomboy growing up. . .

Rosi been on Frontline plus since she was 10 weeks old, we live in the country and she is outside on a retractable leash every couple of hrs. So far i have not seen a flea or tick on her... knock on wood...

I went through the same thing. We found 2 ticks on Jaxon so finally got Advantix and applied it. A day after putting it on, we found another tick!! This one didn't seem buried as deep as the first 2 though, and he was easier to remove. Since then, we haven't found others. We live in a new area, tons of construction and he likes walking in the grass, sniffing everything as we go. I try to keep him moving though to prevent them from jumping on! Hopefully we won't find anymore - they're such nasty little things.

ticks are really nasty. you may want to do some research on brown dog ticks. they can actually live for quite a long time in areas without vegetation and even indoors. i don't know if there is anything we can use to completely repel ticks.

We are on frontline with all my dogs(3 larger and then Reagan our yorkie) we've been happy with it I guess. I agree with everyone that they die once they bite it doesn't repel them, found a dead tick on reagan last night as a matter of fact. I don't have any experience with Advantix so I can't say anything about it though sorry.

Isn't there something that you can put in your yard that will kill ticks. I'm pretty sure some of the bug killer stuff kills ticks. You wouldn't want your dog back there for a period of time after you've put it down though. I'm not positive but its something worth looking into. I'm sure you could find something like that at a Home Depot/Lowes or other lawn and garden store maybe even Wal-mart. The stuff we got(we didn't get it for ticks but I'm pretty sure it had ticks on the list of things it killed) was a powder or granuale(sp?) type stuff that came in a bag.

for what its worth. I have Sissy on Sentinel, a pill form combination of HeartGuard and Flea/Tick/Mosquito detracter. I can't stand the smell of FrontLine or K9 Advantix. I figure if the smell gags me, it certainly can't smell good to them and just how toxic might it really be since you are supposed to wash your hands throughly after coming in contact with it.

There are several products that will make ticks less likely to stay in your yard. However, be careful with what you use. Our babies are so small that miniscule amounts of anything toxic could be fatal to them. Seek out the nature remedies. Many essential oils and many, many flowers are used to repel pests. Good luck.

I just looked up the flea/tick products available and you are correct. Sentinel does not provide tick protection, but according to the information I found - neither does k9 Advantix. Frontline is the only one claiming is has protection, however there are additional topical products just for ticks that say "for complete protection use with Frontline or K9Advantix".

I'm fortunate that we don't live near a wooded are and ticks are not at all common here. But since our puppies are so low to the ground, I would guess they are more susceptible to ticks - particularly since parts of them sweep along the group!!
