| Any thoughts on pet insurance? Does anyone have any thoughts on whether it is worth the money to obtain pet health insurance for a 2 yr. old, 9 lb (thin but tall), healthy yorkie? If you think that it is worth it, are there any plans/insurance companies that you would recommend? |

| In another forum I go to people said that they were not happy with their pet insurance. Many companies do not covered such things as your dog being hit by a car. They also do not pay for any illnesses that they claim are genetic/hereditary and a lot of the time if your dog or cat comes down with something the insurance company refuses to pay saying it is a pre-existing condition. Also the have caps on the amount it will pay on any illness or injury per year. So if your animals medications for something cost $500 a year the insurance may only cover $100. The thing about pet insurance is that most health problems are considered genetic/hereditary or congenital - in other words, not covered by the insurance. So if those are your biggest concerns, you might as well put the premium amount into an emergency savings account for the dog (separate from your household emergency savings account). If you're biggest concerns are accidents like sprains and strains, breaks, etc., then the insurance might be worth considering; it seems most accidents of that nature happen in a puppy's first year, so really the ideal would be to get the insurance *and* also contribute to an emergency savings account, so that in a year or two you'll have enough savings to be able to drop the insurance and still cover what they would have paid from the savings. | That's a great idea! Thanks Breeze for all of the helpful info. on pet insurance! I was a bit skeptical when I read the specifics of one of the plans. I like the idea of using the money that I would put toward pet insurance to establish an emergency savings account for Lucky. My own account won't be limited to certain health conditions like an insurance plan would be. |

| Hi - My two boys were both insured until a few months ago. I stopped it as the policy had new restrictions put on it and there were so many clauses already - it didn't seem any point to it. I now save the money into a separate savings account so if anything does happen unexpected, as you can never tell - I have some money put aside and there's the credit card as well. The insurance company were only making money out of us anyway. |

| excellet ideas What a fabulous idea to put the money away into a special savings account. I have been unhappy with our pet insurance for a while. I got the best plan- supposedly pretty much everything is covered. I thought it was great, until I realized how many little catches and rules there are that no one mentions to you. For example, you must already spend $200 on each category of care before you can claim anything. So I ended up spending alot more than I would have if I didn't get the insurance. And- when we got Loki neudered they had to remove a tooth at the same time because he had double canines- when I sent in the claim form i received a letter back saying that they don't cover dental work- that really annoyed me. Even though my yorkies health is so important to me, I can't stand these insurance companies, there are so many catches. When I think about stopping the insurance it makes me nervous because I feel that something would happen just because I don't have the insurance anymore- but I guess it's something you have to risk. But I do feel great about the idea of a savings account just for emergencies with the pup. Thanks for the great plan! |
