| New Vet Questions I need to start looking around for a vet for when Cali comes home. This is my very first puppy, so I have never even had to go to a vet before. With that said..any advice as to what questions should I be asking potential vets? Thanks in advance!!

| One thing I would ask is how fast can you get appts. Nothing like worrying about your baby and can not get an appt for a day or to. Do they take walk ins. How experienced with small breeds are they is another.

| I would also ask if they are willing to come in at any hour if you have an emergency? |

| Do vets do that? I was under that impression that that's what the ER vets are for.. You sure are lucky if you found one that will

| You're right - most vets do have regular office hours - and often, you'll need to take your pup to the ER vet if something happens in the middle of the night, etc. But, do find out if your vet(s) is on call for phone calls 24/7. Often they can help over the phone - and, this may also be a time when they just might run into the office for you. And - also often how much coverage a vet office can give depends on how many vets are working at that office. They are more apt to rotate night call, etc., if they have several vets to share this coverage. Ask around and see which vets other people use and how happy they are with the care they get. Good luck - Carol Jean |

| I think the only true evaluation of a vet is to ask around and try them out. or even just go to the office and sit in the waiting room and observe. I think you can learn a lot that way. how friendly they are with other pets and how the pets act around them.

| Insurance I purchased insurance for my puppy that covers many vaccines and all office visits are covered and it gets me a discount on medications. I highly recommend it. The puppy will be going to the vet a lot during it's first year for shots and check ups. It's wonderful that vets offer insurance for pets as well...that's also something you might want to think about when choosing a vet. Last edited by mpyorkie; 04-06-2006 at 12:57 PM. |
