Royal Canine Puppy versus Adult Hi! My yorkie (Abby) is 15 months old - 4 lbs 4 oz. We just switched her from the Royal Canine yorkie puppy kibble to the adult kibble. The size seems a lot larger for her - and she doesn't seem as thrilled with it but its only been a few days. She also seems a little constipated - but she is stressed out a little due to afternoon thunderstorms the past few days. Is it ok to revert to the puppy kibble or is it more important to switch them to adult food? Not sure of the real differences here. Any advice is welcomed!

The main difference between puppy food and adult food is that the puppy food is more nutritionally “dense” — meaning, ounce for ounce, it’s higher in calories and other nutrients to help your puppy grow. Once the puppy reaches adulthood, if you keep feeding high calorie food, it can make your dog fat, which can lead to serious health problems. It probably wouldn’t hurt to go back to puppy food for a short time and then transition to the adult food more slowly, but it’s not a good idea to stay on puppy food unless your vet recommends it for some medical reason.

I also just found out there is a Royal Canin Xpetit and Xsmall food for adults - has anyone tried that - in the green bag? They say the size is the same as the puppy kibble but it is adult food for extra small dogs.

I haven’t used that, but it sounds like a better choice if the adult kibble you’re using is substantially larger than the puppy kibble you were feeding. I’ll be moving my Jax (who is just a bit over four pounds) to adult food soon, and I am planning to use an adult kibble that’s almost exactly the same size as his puppy kibble.

My two babies eat this and love it! Would definitely recommend if you’re looking for smaller kibble. | |

I have the adult yorkie RC left over from my Heidi that was killed in July. I now have a four month old yorkie that I am trying to get to eat "puppy" food. My puppy seems to like the adult RC better. I know she should not eat it until she is 9 months old. I better stop!

Koa and Baxter Two yorkie brothers Koa is going on 13 and Baxter is going on 6. Both are on Royal Canin special diets. Koa gastrointestinal and Baxter is on Urinary SO. They just do not seem satisfied with this food. Always looking for more. Always hungry. Would like to know if others have issues with the special diets from Royal Canin and what would be a suggestion. thanks, Jenny
