The main difference between puppy food and adult food is that the puppy food is more nutritionally “dense” — meaning, ounce for ounce, it’s higher in calories and other nutrients to help your puppy grow. Once the puppy reaches adulthood, if you keep feeding high calorie food, it can make your dog fat, which can lead to serious health problems.

It probably wouldn’t hurt to go back to puppy food for a short time and then transition to the adult food more slowly, but it’s not a good idea to stay on puppy food unless your vet recommends it for some medical reason.
