| Weight Loss Help Today, our vet said that Tallulah, who weighs 10.3 pounds, needs to go on a diet. We adopted her from a rescue society about 2 years ago; she weighed between 6 and 7 pounds and was painfully thin. Our vet thought she was between 2 and 3 years old, was very thin, and had given birth. We've been feeding her 2 Tbsp. wet food and 1/8 cup dry food twice a day since we've had her. We'll definitely have to cut down on her treats. Thank goodness she loves carrots! Does anyone know how much food we should be feeding her, amount-wise and/or calorie-wise? Any help or advice would be appreciated. Thanks so much! |

| So glad that you joined our growing family of yorkie lovers. YorkieTalk is the best! My Lollie is a piggy-yorkie and had to go on a weight loss program. I chose a slow weight loss plan by reducing her kibble allotment by a few kibbles per day and increased her exercise by more fetches and walk. In the past year she has lost a bit over a pound. She still has a bit to go but she is looking and feeling much better. With that said, I would suggest a slow and consistent reduction in food (including treats) plus a bit more exercise. Good luck. Keep us updated on Tallulah's progress. |

| Welcome Mike was a chubby puppy and out vet told me I was giving him almost twice more food than needed. We went from 90 grams to 50 grams of kibble slowly by cutting 5-10% of food at a time and giving him frozen beans, peas and carrots as treats. Those are quite filling for the stomach and low on calories. He lost around a pound and has a stable weight since. So now he gets around 50 grams of kibble which is around 200 kcal + treats. To me it seems like very little amount of food, but his weight is stable and that is a good indicator that he gets the necessary calories as I understand. Good luck with the weight loss journey for Tallulah! Happy that she's got a loving family now <3 |

| Cutting back on kibble can be replaced with frozen cut green beans, Cody lost 1 1/2 pounds over 1 1/2 years by cutting back on kibble and replacing with 1/3 cup green beans, he's a big boy weighing in at 12 Lbs.With dogs you must do a slow weight loss, not like humans where we can drop 5 lbs in a month. With dogs they must loose in ounces. 1/2 a oz a month or 2 is a safe weight loss. Keep a weight chart, start with his current weight, because Cody was getting allergy shots we were at the vet every 4 to 6 weeks, I had him weighed at each visit. Now I have a baby scale and weigh him monthly to make sure he's in that 12 Lb range.
