| This past Friday my two yorkies, Jethro&Astro, were playing in the yard while I watered the plants. After coming inside, about 10-15 minutes later, I noticed one was rubbing against the couch in an odd manner. When I picked him up I felt bumps on his chest...his chest and underbelly were covered in hives and he had one swollen eye, and a swollen muzzle. He was also panting excessively. I gave him some benadryl and took him to emergency where they gave him a cortisone shot to reduce the swelling. Thank goodness he was back to his normal spunky self within a couple of hours. But we have NO idea what caused this reaction. I had a similar incident just a few months ago at our previous home while indoors with my other yorkie. I'm very concerned because it happened to both my boys at two different locations. I had my first yorkie for 12 years and never once went through this. Has anyone else's pups have a similar reaction and if so what caused it? |

An article on Care2, "Allergy Plants for Dogs: Avoid Planting These in Your Yard" offers a list of landscape plants that can cause problems. There are some common plants listed in the article. Ouch! It also lists bermudagrass. I have a mild allergy to grass, but it's common in the area where I live; the same allergy in a pup would be very hard. Hope this helps. --KatysMom | |

| It would be nice if our little ones could talk. It definitely is an allergic reaction. What all do you have in your yard besides just grass?

| Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | To me, it sounds like a sting. Do you have scorpions or toxic spiders in your area...? It's VERY good you had Benadryl on hand. For sudden/emergent allergic reactions, I always give 2mg/pound.
