| Sending hugs and positive thoughts and energy your way. I've not had the experience you and your sweetie are going through but did find a few postings on line. Links below--hoping one or more of these folks are able to be contacted via email. Read these and several other articles. All suggest it is an adjustment for the whole family, but one with many rewards as the initial recovery passes. Please give him an extra, tender hug from our house. --KatysMom About Odie: Odie's Eyes. Odie is a Shih-Tzu. This seems to be a blog or web page about "animal communication." The entry regarding surgery was posted four years ago--23 May 2014. Writer indicated this pup had much pain for several days following the surgery--but "came through like a champ and is [now] so much more comfortable as a no-eyed Shih-Tzu."Another site--seems worth investigating further. "Blind Dog Support." Linked article is dated 16 January 2018. Last edited by KatysMom; 07-13-2018 at 01:47 PM. |

| You are all such kind and compassionate people. Thank you so much for all your support. I sent a message to the Instagram account for Odie and she very graciously responded to my questions. It sounds like we're in for a rough ride for the next 3 days, then he'll be ok. I messaged the after hours vet service because he has been whining and is definitely in pain. They taught me some tips and tricks like checking his heart rate and suggested I ask for some Tramadol tomorrow. I just hope he can get some sleep tonight. |

| Hi there. Sending more love your way. How is he doing? Was he able to sleep? Were you? Hope you were able to get the Tramadol. In our thoughts --KatysMom |

| I put him in his crate (his safe spot) and he went to sleep there, and after a couple hours of watching him I went to bed myself. I didn't shut the crate door because he had his cone sticking out of it, which was my mistake. When I got up he had moved and was sleeping under the dining room table. I'm not sure why he chose that spot, but as long as he's resting I'm not going to be picky about where he does it. I called the vet this morning because he was whimpering/crying and they told me to give him a dose of Rimadyl and see how he does. I did and he slept for about 4 hours after that. Then got up, ate and pottied, and now he's back asleep. He seems to be able to rest so I'll hold off on the Tramadol for now. He unfortunately has not been able to resist the urge to rub his face on things, so he's coned except for feeding time. I think it's more of a habit thing than an itchy face thing - he typically rubs his face on stuff when he's happy. Like after he eats or after getting a nice neck scratch. I spoke to some other people about this type of surgery and the consensus seems to be the first 3 days are terrible. I definitely wasn't prepared for this type of recovery. Maybe the surgeon's other patients were just different, more resilient, but he's well past the 24 hour mark and he is not fine. Again, not upset with the vet or anything, I am just the type of person who is typically overprepared for everything. We have been through lots of other medical issues together and I've never felt this helpless before. This has been very difficult for both of us. Talking about it has helped - so thanks to all of you for listening. |

| Eyes Glad you both managed to get some sleep. He probably was unsettled and that is why he moved during the night. I know my dog wanders about at night and sleeps in many different places, and he is well and not sick! He sounds like he really needs the cone, but he will get used to it. My dog had one on for two months after eye surgery and adapted well quickly. Good news that he is eating, pooping etc, so he is probably not feeling too bad. It’s only 24 hrs so far, so hang in there. Warm thoughts and prayers for better days soon. Last edited by dottiesyrky; 07-14-2018 at 11:55 AM. |

| I too am glad to hear you both got some sleep. Sounds as though the Rimadyl seems to be helping. From the articles I read, it seemed most folks had a rough few days. So hope the time passes quickly. Keeping you guys in my thoughts. --KatysMom |

| It is heartbreaking to know that you and he will have a few more hellish days to face after all you have already been through. Hang in there...you have many people rooting for you both!

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | I SO hope he is doing better. If you don't think you're getting sufficient pain management for him - I'd call that vet office and shout to the roof tops!!! Dogs mask a *lot* of their pain, so it's probably hurting even more than you can observe.

| Hey guys. We are having a bit of a setback this morning - he has some bleeding from his right eye and he is very agitated. He's been contorting his body and crying out like something is biting him. I think it's Tramadol time. The vet comes in at 10am and we are going. Not the same vet that did the surgery - he's not in today - but I'm sure the other vet can handle it. |

The surgeon didn't prescribe pain meds, maybe it's best that he's not in today. Prayers and more prayers that this visit puts him on a more-or-less pain-free recovery. Again, prayers to you all. --KatysMom | |

| I took him in and the vet wanted to keep him for observation today, so he's going to be there for a little while. I did ask for Tramadol specifically and I hope they will give it to me. His left eye area looks fine but the right eye area looks a little swollen and red. I don't think it's anything he or I did, maybe there's just a build up of fluid behind the sutures or something and it's starting to leak out. I hate to admit this... I really do... but I am relieved to have someone watching him for just a little bit. Even if it's only a couple hours. I haven't eaten, showered, worked out, or done anything remotely healthy since Friday morning. I'm a mess. |

| I managed to take a shower... then I called the vet to see how he was doing, because I am THAT mom. I should have mentioned, I took him to my regular vet clinic which is much smaller than the one that did the surgery. The lady who was there today is a visiting vet and had not seen my dog before (he's a regular) but she was very helpful. She said his sutures are ok and the weeping is ok - the problem is he is in pain. Which is what I've been saying all along. She also said she saw the notes from yesterday where I called the surgery clinic, said he was in pain and asked for Tramadol, but they told me to keep him on the Rimadyl. Which she said is BS because it's a very painful surgery. Have I mentioned I really like this vet? She's giving me pain medication (both tramadol and gabapentin), antibiotics, and she wants me to do warm compresses on his face to help the blood circulation. I wanted both antibiotics and tramadol from the surgeon, and I really should have pushed harder, but that's a learning experience for me. I'll be picking him up in an hour. |
