| I'm probably the last person in the world that didn't know this. Last Friday, We took Addie and Raider, our 3-yr olds, to be groomed. Getting them groomed always wears them out, but all Addie wanted to do was sleep when we got them home. We noticed that she would occasionally try to rub her eyes with her paws or on the carpet. Dinner time and she wouldn't eat. We looked at her more closely and both eyes were red and had a lot of drainage. It was after hours, so I took her to the local vet 24-Hr ER. Corneal Ulcers in both eyes, probably caused by getting shampoo in her eyes at the groomer. She was in a lot of pain and we had three medications to give her. I took her to our vet on Saturday and again on Monday and she is now back to normal. Both vets said that you should always put eye drops in a dog's eyes before washing to keep any shampoo that might get in the eyes from causing damage. I guess we have been lucky this far. I stopped by the groomers on Saturday after leaving the vet and they said that they always use drops, but that on Friday Addie was washed twice. She was washed and dried and then had to wait for the groomer to finish a "trouble" dog. The groomer thought Addie wasn't clean enough around her face and had her washed a second time. They failed to give her the drops before the second washing. You've been warned! |

| Glad she is better. Never heard of this not even in my vet assistant class. Never had issues either. I will have to look further into this.

| Both the ER vet and our regular vet agreed on this. Who knows. |

| Thanks so much for the tip. What kind of drops are used and where do you get them? Glad your little one turned out fine and that is because you saw the problem right off and took immediate action and saved her eyesight. Good job guys!!!

| The vet gave me some drops to use and they appear to just be Artificial Tears. The main ingrediant is mineral oil. |

| Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | Please keep in mind that the corneal ulcers could VERY well also have been caused by your dog being left way too long in a "dryer box" (or, repeatedly), which is *extremely* drying to they eyes (not to mention traumatic, in my opinion). What you heard from your groomer does NOT sound normal to me *at all* - and personally, I would not be bringing my dogs there again (I don't bring my dogs to groomers ever, actually). I've been grooming my dogs for 13 years+ and have never caused corneal ulcers ever. This does not sound right to me at all.
