| Chicken & Rice Cause Constipation? It is now the end of the 3rd day that JB has not had a bowel movement. He had diarrhea for 3-4 days and then, per vet instructions, I gave him 1/2 tsp Imodium 2x on Monday. He had his last bout of diarrhea that Monday night. Since then, I stopped the Imodium and started him on a chicken & rice diet (3/4 rice to 1/4 chicken).. He has been eating 3 smaller meals a day. I add water to the chick -n-rice to help with hydration even though he is drinking. He is acting fine with no lethargy, pain, etc. I also understand that constipation is when the dog goes outside, hunches over like he needs to go but no stool is produced. JB is not doing that. He hasn't had the urge to go at all. I added some greek yogurt tonight to his chick -n-rice BUT I have now heard that rice can actually be causing the constipation since he has been eating it now for 3 days. Should I continue to feed chick -n- rice and add pumpkin now with yogurt? Or should I try just less and less rice and stick with yogurt only and no pumpkin? Any/all advice is appreciated

| Constipation can also be them not going whether they are trying or not. I’m not a fan of yogurt because it is a dairy product and after they are puppies they become lactose intolerant. My boy was having constipation issues and I gave pumpkin and it worked very well. Pumpkin is supposed to be the wonder food that can fix diarrhea and constipation.

Ok, so what you are saying is keep him going on the chick n- rice but add pumpkin and delete the yogurt? How long does it take for the pumpkin to work?

| That’s what I personally would do. It only took a day and my guy went the next morning. Sometimes also when it’s been diarrhea it can take a day to build to a full solid poo. I know humans that have taken Imodium and it has seriously backed them up and others take it with no issues maybe it’s like that for dogs too.

I have been told if giving pumpkin, to give 1 tsp (not TBSP) per 10 lbs. of weight 2x a day. Is that about right or do you usually give more? I'm afraid if given more he will go back to diarrhea.

| Update: Had success with the pumpkin and I consulted my vet at that point. It only took 1 tsp and 2 hrs later he went. I guess I will try now to add a small amount of his kibble to the chicken -n- rice and see how he does. I was also told NOT to add additional water like I was to make sure he now goes to his water bowl. Now lets see if this works...

| Plain pure pumpkin... Not pie filling. We keep a stock of it in the pantry. Good stuff.

| Happy to hear JB is doing well. If this happens again in the future, keep in mind that after a bout of diarrhea, the digestive system can take some time to fill up again. Not having a bowel movement for a day or two is normal, nothing to worry about. I learned this with Teddy and our vet. No need for pumpkin. Just let the system recover naturally.
