| Teeth Cleaning??? I have been practically brushing my 3yr old male's teeth daily because I hear that Yorkies are susceptible to going bad, gums etc. Also, my previous Yorkie had to have his teeth cleaned 2x at the Vets office. This is another reason why I have been trying to stay on top of the cleaning. Anyway, I took my 3yr boy to the Vet yesterday and they said he should have his teeth cleaned. I was kinda bummed bc I had been trying to keep them clean but I do see he has developed plagued. The vet also said that eventhough I had been cleaning them that dogs just like humans would need their teeth cleaned especially Yorkies. She is a good vet and also pointed out that she could tell I had been brushing and knows they would be much worse had I not been brushing. My questions. 1. Is there some kind of chew thing, like a snack that anyone has tried to help with the developing plague? 2. Do you go and have the teeth cleaning done at the vet being that the dog has to go under anesthesia? |

| Yep, the teeth thing with our Yorkie's is a bummer! It is kind of well known Yorkie's has nasty mouths -- not their or your fault -- genetics! I brush my babies teeth daily and put Heathy Mouth in her water and she still has lost a lot of teeth. I have her teeth cleaned every 6 months due to the losing teeth issues that she has had in the past. She is healthy so I don't fear the anesthesia and I know the vet who does her cleanings. I fear the possible infections/abscesses and the toll that would take on her body more.

| Brushing and chews don't get under the gum line so it is important to have dentals as needed. Anesthesia is perfectly safe especially when blood work is done before hand. Many many dogs get yearly cleanings. Although if done everyday brushing can help but most of it is up to genetics.

| I just had my 12 year old Yorkie's teeth cleaned and extracted a few months back. I brush his teeth every day as well. Mine has bad teeth since he was a pup...alot of yorkie have bad teeth due to genetic. I was really nervous having him put under but he did come out okay. I now wipe his mouth teeth after every meal with a moist cotton pad 3 times a day as he eats 4 times a day and brush at night and even with that his teeth is starting to turn yellow. With brushing I have his teeth cleaned once every few years but if I hadn't brush it would have been every year.
