| Tooth Problems I took my little guy to the vet to have his teeth cleaned and when I picked him up they had extracted 6 teeth. I really like my vet a lot, and when I asked for an explanation they said first, it's really difficult to see tooth problems in small breeds until they are knocked out. They just squirm around too much to see what's what in a regular checkup. Next they said they found gum problems, loose teeth and some abscess which is what required the extractions. They also said it's a problem with the breed and he is getting older. He's 6! So, my questions is does this sound kosher? It's my first dog ever and I love the little guy like crazy. FYI, that was two days ago and he's doing just fine back to his normal self. Any thoughts are welcome. |

| Yes everything they said is possible. That being said, after my dog's dental my vet shows me with computer imaging, and explained exactly why each tooth was extracted. The "show me" and explanation are very important to me, and I can see where the problem was for each tooth. I have come to expect this. Cali has lost a number of teeth and has had one access. She is 8. The vet has also told me I am doing everything right (brushing with PetSmile daily and using Healthy Mouth in the water). Their teeth are so small and so close together! Guess I should add I have also had some of the dentals done by a board certified dental vet and then my regular vet just to assure myself that there is not something else I should be doing. Only real difference was the cost ($1700 vs $200) and the amount of time the vet spent with me -- their stories we're the same.

| Yep that sounds right. Infection and bad tarter can cause teeth to be loose and they will have to be pulled. A lot of things they can't see without X-ray or even just anesthesia and sometimes it ends up being worse then what they thought.

YT 500 Club Member | My first Yorkie RIP had a terrible mouth. I took him to a doggie dentist specialist. This Doctor was amazing. What she did was take pictures first, with the help from assistants, uploaded them to the computer and WOW it was so shocking. She explained exactly which tooth needed to come out, how his bones would be built up with some kind of bone building material, all of that sealed and gums sewn. After, he was put on play rest for about 2 weeks, but he ate real well. So happy we did this for our messed up baby's mouth. But you don't want to know how much it cost. Ugh! Oh, and repeated X-rays to monitor bone healing Ugh!

YT 500 Club Member | Oh, wanted to mention- I would be very upset if I took my baby in for a routine cleaning and he came out with missing teeth, without the vet giving me a quick call to explain why. Also, with our doggie dental specialist, she called me 2 times while she was working on him. She let me know his vitals, what she had done to that point, how much longer it would be. Again, you don't want to know the cost. He was well worth it. Just had to cut back on a few things. Oh, and with missing teeth his tongue didn't stick out.
