| Yorkie health Hi everyone. I am a first time yorkie owner (chocolate yorkie), he is 3 months old but when he was about seven weeks old I discovered that he has an extra toe on the side of his right backleg. I did some research and learned that it is called a dew claw. This one has no bone inside and it seems like the toe itself is not growing bigger, but the nail does. My puppy is having his first shave in about two weeks time and I am worried that the toe will cause trouble like being cut or later the nail will hurt him. Has anyone ever dealt with this before? I could really use some advise about how to handle it and if i should take to the vet. Any advise would be helpful... |

| Welcome to YT. Yes, it is called a dew claw. When it's grooming time just tell the groomer about the dew claw, my boy has one also, plus a yorkie now passed had one. Make sure that nail is always cut when you get your pup groomed, sometimes a groomer will forget about the dew claw, as long as the nail is cut every time your baby is groomed it should cause no problems.

| Dew claws are pretty normal both of mine have them. Just make sure when you cut all the other nails you cut that one and make sure it doesn't get to long and get caught on something. Some breeders remove these and some don't.

| Thanks so much this is the first time I have ever seen this. I will just keep an eye on it and make sure it gets cut. Doesn't look like it bothers him so that is good 😄 |

| Dogs with dew claws in not uncommon, before owning yorkies I had 2 other breeds and they had their dew claws. As long as you keep that nail cut short you will not have any problems.

| Dew claws are often removed by the breeder when the puppy is at a very young age. (My Bella had hers removed before we bought her.) If the dew claws give you problems in the future, they can be removed, but in older puppies and young dogs it is a more stressful procedure and will require anesthesia. Hopefully that won't be necessary for your dog. I'm just putting it out there as an option if there are any problems with the dew claws. |

| My previous dog had all her dew claws. You just have to make sure to trim them just as you trim the other nails.
