Yorkie Talker | ![]() My Yorkie, Ginger is 10 years old. She has been my companion for 4 years and generally in pretty good health, besides a terrible hacking from her trachea problem. Also, just recently, Ginger is quite frequently scratching all over her body. She eats well, sleeps good, goes for walks with me and is attentive and loves to sit with me at times during the day and/or evening. She does not have fleas nor any other mites that I can see nor is her skin broken open anywhere. Is there something I can use on Ginger to help alleviate this need to scratch? |

| ![]() You can give benadryl. The dosage is 1mg per pound and can be given every 12 hours. I give my 5 pound pup 1/4 of a benadryl when she's itchy. |

| ![]() Benadryl is actually not all that great for allergies and ends up having to be given many times a day to actually work.

| ![]() Yea, it definitely didn't help with my pug who had serious allergies but does seem to help the Yorkie who just get itchy occasionally & the vet said if it's helping it's perfectly safe. |

She's not saying it's 'unsafe', she's saying it's not usually effective with dog allergies. And to stay effective, it must be given every 4-6 hrs bc it has such a short half life.
