| ![]() Coco just turned one 8/11/16 and has always been free fed dry food since we brought her home at 10 weeks. We have discovered lately that she loves apples, melons, green beans, sweet potatoes, carrots, cottage cheese, celery and of course chicken, peanut butter and eggs. We had started scrambling an egg for her and mixing her kibble in or mixing it with cottage cheese, but the last week or so, she won't touch it with the kibble in it or eat any of her dry food anymore. Of course we likely spoiled her too with the Fruit and veggies for treats and I had really wanted to keep her on dry food for her teeth. I am worried she won't be getting her nutrients since she's not eating dog food, so trying to decide if I should put her on wet dog food or just start home cooking for her. And if I do that what Vitamins to add to the home cooking? Has anyone run into this and what was your solution? Thanks for any advice! (I tried to add a pic but wouldn't let me) |

| ![]() It happened to me before, my friend said once you feed your dog a homemade dog food the effect will be like what happened to your dog right now. Because he will start looking for the taste of that food. That's the reason why they don't like the dog food that we always feed to them before. But I know there's a way to solve this kind of feeding problem, you're right, sometimes we don't know if they get the right nutrients to the food that we give to them. This can help you, it's all about Foods to Give Your Pet and How you can see some useful information there that can apply to your routine feeding schedule. |

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | ![]() Hi and welcome ![]() Kibble helping teeth is just a myth; think of your own teeth...does crunching on hard food help out your teeth? Nope. No different in dogs. Dog's teeth are cleaned either by brushing or by chew treats...they're not cleaned by eating. As far as food, totally up to you. A great option for you would probably be something like Honest Kitchen -- where they provide the dry "mix", and you add the meat and other stuff - and it's all balanced via that mix. SUPER duper easy. There are plenty of other foods out there like this too...like Sojos, Know Better Dog Food etc...

| ![]() Thank you all so much for responding! I'm glad to know about the myth with dry food. So far, Coco is really good about chewing on bully sticks and chew toys for her teeth. Now, just to decide which kind of wet food, or homemade recipe and which supplements to add to that. I just retired this year so I have time to cook for her. I talked with the Vet office once about it, but will try again so not to wait until her annual checkup in December. I think it's so wonderful that everyone can share experience and wisdom here so we can keep our babies safe and healthy! Thank you all so much! And if anyone else has ideas I Would love to hear them. I still am not able to add a pic of Coco💕🐶🐾 |
