| ![]() My 9yr old teacup yorkie has dry flaky skin and now has bald spots. I've been putting fish oil on her food, bathing with oatmeal shampoo. The vet gave us a spray to put on her hot spots and nothing is working. Does anyone have any insight or experience with this |

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | ![]() Hi and welcome. Yes, I've dealt with this kind of thing extensively. Where are the bald spots exactly? - May need to test for ring worm (this is a fungus, not a worm); need to grow out sample in culture for 10 days, then view under scope - Hot spots need to be skin-scraped and looked at under scope to determine whether bacterial or not. Can't treat it if don't know what it is. For pyoderma, the gold standard treatment is Simplicef x 30 days. - Should test thyroid ASAP - Should most definitely rule out Cushings by having the Cortisol-Creatinine Ratio Urine test. If results are considered inconclusive, but there are other signs of Cushings, then you do need to test for Atypical Cushings.

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | ![]() Btw, what about allergies? Is she chewing/licking her paws at all? Also, are there ANY other random, weird symptoms going on...?

| ![]() Her spots are on her side and down the middle of her back. I will make an appointment with the vet this week to have her skin tested. We do have our 6 month old grandson living with us, and I was wondering if the hair loss might be nerves, but I don't think that would cause the dry flaky skin. |

| ![]() I don't know much about skin diseases or medications that would apply, but in addition to the fish oils, have you looked into adding a few drops of apple cider vinegar to her water/food and feeding a few licks of organic coconut oil daily?

| ![]() I agree about testing the thyroid and a skin scrape. Did all bloodwork come back okay? |
