Skin condition HI, I am new to the community and a new Yorkie owner. I got my Yorkie at 3 years of age from the rescue and he has been great except he seems to always have scabs on his skin. I have taken him to the vet, but they say oh yes, Yorkies are like that, but have never offered anything to help. My groomer suggested I stop feeding him anything with grain. I did that and he was much better for awhile, but they seem to be back again. Anyone with experience in this, I would be greatly appreciative.

What did your vet actually mean with that statement? It implies that Yorkies all come with skin issues, and that is simply NOT true....(I have had one dog in all my years of breeding, that had a skin issue....and he is here with me, on a grain free diet, doing completely fine. He is a beautiful young man, but I have never used him for breeding, because I do not want to pass along any inheritable genes that may produce any kind of dermatitis.) I did an enormous amount of research on dermatitis when I was faced with this issue....I will see if I can find one of the papers that I followed to clear up this boys skin issues, and have kept him free and clear of skin issues thru his diet.....absolutely zero grains in his diet....he gets boiled chicken breasts, boiled liver, boiled gizzards, boiled stew meat, boiled lamb chops occasionally, with veggies (carrots, celery, green peas, green beans, apples, pears, cantaloupes, bananas, mangoes, avocados, etc) Do your own research on this kind of diet....there are many people on here that feed raw and balanced cooked diets to their babies....they know hundreds times more than I do about special diets....This is the only baby I do not feed RC to....even prescription RC....and he is doing super on what he gets.....no skin issues at all now....but it lurks in his genes and must be kept at bay with (neutering so he does no pass this along) strict diet!

Thank you Yorkiemom1. I just think my vet does not know what is causing it, so it's a meaningless statement. I feed him all grain free, but maybe there is one brand that is better. ((What is RC?)) I feed him Rachel Ray grain free food, just a small amount and then just baked chicken, or pork, and also grain free snacks as well. But he still has this. Is there any recommended shampoo that helps?

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | I would continue never giving grains to this kiddo. I'm actually in shock that your vet didn't just do a simple skin scraping - it takes 5 seconds - why was that not done? Go to another vet ASAP bc it really is totally ridiculous for a vet to say "oh yorkies are like this" -- well, they're not. The skin is an *organ* and when something is going wrong with it, it means one has to figure it out. Get a skin scraping at another vet - or, do the best thing and get to a Vet Derm asap. This is likely allergies, and could be a pyoderma infection. Should also check thyroid and ANY other random symptoms.

Dear Wylie's Mom::: Thank you so much for your great advice. I will look for a dermatologist. Since Tyson is also my first dog, I never knew that such a doctor existed for dogs. Boy, do I have a lot to learn, I thank you so very much! xoxo
