| Too much fat in blood & inflamed pancreas. Need diet help... Blood work just came back on my (almost) 12 year old Yorkie. Doc said he had high fat to blood levels and a slightly inflamed pancreas. Said I shouldn't be alarmed but should change the diet now. What food do you recommend for this condition? I currently feed my two Yorkies (the other one is about to turn 10) Wellness Complete Health Deboned Chicken & Barley. Anyone else have this issue? How did you handle it? Thanks for any help! |

| He asked you to change the food immediately, but didn't advise you what to change it to? I would talk to your vet and see if he can't be more specific, he shouldn't have just left you hanging like that. I'm not familiar with the fat content of what you're feeding, but obviously your pup needs something lower in fat than what they are currently eating. First off, I would ask the vet for some rx food that is for dogs prone to pancreatitis and see if that doesn't calm things down and re-check after a month or so. During that time you could work on finding a food that would suit your pup that isn't rx, or even get a balanced recipe for home cooking from a vet nutritionist.

| I have never had a dog with this issue, but my vet always recommends Royal Canin Rx diet for pancreatitis.....I do not know the correct prescription name for it, but it is easily googled. Apparently well tolerated and liked by a lot of dogs. |

| Is the yorkie getting any people food? Perhaps that is the culprit and not the dog food.

| My mother in law was recently told her 11 year old schnoodle had fat in her blood as well and the vet put her on Hills I/D Low Fat. Hope you find something that works for your baby! |

| Treats were the culprit in Zoey's last pancreatatis attack. Only Cherrios now for treats. She eats Royal Canin Gastrointestinal Low Fat canned and kibble. Canned in the morning and softened kibble for lunch and a small amount of canned for dinner with a 1/4 Pepcid pill for stomach acid. The treats were 24% fat - WAY too high in fat.

| Your vet told you to change the diet and didn't suggest a food? I would call back and ask for suggestions. Also, just curious as to how he arrived at a diagnosis of "slightly inflamed pancreas" ? It may be that the lipase is elevated but I have seen that in many pups without it being an issue. Is your pup sick? What testing was done?
