| Itchy Puppy - Allergies My baby girl has bad allergies and itches a lot. I've had her to the vet and with a steroid shot and some antibiotics it gets under control. However, as soon as the antibiotics are done she is right back to itching. She is now on allergy medicine which is expensive but does seem to control the itching. Just wonder if others have this issue and if there are any home/natural remedies I can try. Sometimes she itches so much she gets scabs. |

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | Hi and welcome to YT . When you say "puppy" - what do you mean...is she an actual puppy...? Bc allergies in puppies are *extremely* unlikely due to how their immune system is currently developing. My Marcel is on Atopica and has been for years. It's most def not cheap, but it works for him so well! So, it's worth it. I have not found good luck w/ any natural remedies at all. You should read this thread for sure: http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/die...tart-here.html

| Itchy Puppy I still call her a puppy but she is 7 years old. I also have her on Atopica and it is the first allergy med that seems to work for her. How often and how many pills does your dog get a day? I tried dropping her down to 1 a day every 24 hours and she starts itching again. |

This is the way it's usually given: you "ramp up" the med for about 6 weeks - giving it every day for those 6 wks, then you start to cut back...ideally getting it down to 2-3x a week only. I've never heard of giving it more than once a day...? I give it to my Marcel on Tues and Thursdays, btw. If you're giving it 1+ times a day and still seeing breakthrough then I view this regimen as not working for her. I'd probably be trying Apoquel instead and see what results you get there. Apoquel can be *extremely* tough to get, btw, due to shortages...

YT 2000 Club Member | dog I spent 700 dollars on an itchy Yorkie. The vet put this dog on zd hills dog food to check for food allergy. Gave her benadryl a flea med and apoquel. Dee Dee is better. Also the carpet was cleaned for dust allergy. I still put coconut oil on dry skin spots. Oh and she gets well actin which is an omega fatty acid. .shampoo and rinse with chlorhexadine but now using hylyte shampoo and cream rinse. Can get that from petmeds.Com hope this helps. Pray over your dog. God hears and answers. Last edited by sandy simpson; 12-02-2015 at 06:26 AM. |
