2+2=4 X the Love ♥ Donating Member | Thoughts on Dog Food choices. This or That ? I have one 13 yr old pup who is in complete health other than a slight heart murmur and a 6 yr old in perfect health. Both are over weight (above standers with medium frame average of 13lbs) so I want something that will also help with that, that is good for them and their coat and teeth. Currently they are on Pedigree small breed and have done really well with it. Its not the best of course but at the time I had four pups and cost factored into out decision. Plus, I have tried unsuccessfully three other times throughout the years to switch them to another better brand of food. It always ends up in a nasty runny mess for months on end so I have had to switch them back. I have done some research and found two brands that are not only affordable but seem to a good blend of nutritious foods. The cost is about double of what I spend now for a 50lb bag but if it will help get them down to a better weight and keep continue to keep them healthy I don't' mind the spending a bit more. One is Blue Buffalo the other is 4Health both are adult/senior formula, both have very similar ingredients if not the same. 4Health is only sold at TLC (35lbs for 36.99) Blue Buffalo cost 33.99 for only 15lbs. Which is a huge difference in price. Ingredients: Blue Buffalo Life Protection Chicken & Brown Rice Small Bites Senior Dog Food at PETCO 4health Small Bites Formula for Adult Dogs, 35 lb. Bag - For Life Out Here

| Honestly I'm not a fan of Blue Buffalo. Most dogs I know have GI problems on it. I know lots of dogs who actually do well on 4health. Not worth the $$$ IMO at all. While pedigree isn't very good, if they seem to do well on that, maybe stick with something similar but a bit of a notch up. Purina Beyond is an option that is simple and a lot of dogs do well on as well as Pro Plan or purina one. Some folks don't like Purina either but IMO, it's a step up from Pedigree (certain formulas).

I've personally had great luck with Acana, particularly the Singles formulas, but they're pricey.

| Budget friendly is a two edge sword. Imho, you spend the money upfront on quality food or later in vet bills. The better food doesn't have "fillers" and is more satisfying which you generally have to feed less. Their nutrition is better and that will show up in their coat and health. The most expensive is not always the best. Research and more research is the answer. Buy the best quality you can afford.

2+2=4 X the Love ♥ Donating Member | Thanks for the input ladies . . still have a lot of research to do before making a decision. They are use to chicken & rice so I want to stay with something that also has those ingredients plus other natural not artificial flavors. Ann, The Natures Logic is very expensive and way out of my price range but thanks for the suggestion.

| I home cook for mine - they've never been anything other than lean. I would look for something that's a weight reduction type of formula to get the weight off - esp for the 13 yo with heart problems. PS I would choose Royal Canin Mini if I were feeding dog food.

2+2=4 X the Love ♥ Donating Member | I chose to go with the 4Health for seniors age 7+ from TSC. I love all of the added fruits, vegs and fish oils. This was the first day and oh my Quincy loves it, he dug right in and I actually had to take it up so he wouldn't eat the entire bowl full. Sort of defeats the purpose of the senior blend for less active pups if he's just going to gorge himself. Ruby on the other hand is just now being put back on dry kibble after a fractured jaw three months ago and is a bit more hesitant to eat it but I am trying to encourage her to get in there and try it. I am sure that she will like it just as much as Quincy does. So now to see how the digestive track does... that should be fun. Keeping my finger crossed that it goes better than the last time we tried switching to a better food.

| I've tried some of the five star rating dog food but I always end up back at Royal Canin for Yorkies. My dog loves it and he seems to do best with this food. So I am going to stick with it.

| Hi dawn! Good to see you posting I know it has been a busy year for you! I hope the food is going over well- what came to my mind that is budget friendly, has chicken and rice options and is digestive friendly is the Nutri source brand. They do a really good job with their pre and pro biotics and a lot of folks that I have worked with who have Tummy sensitive dogs have done very well on their brand. A bag of their regular line foods is approx 45$ for thirty pounds (As opposed to 63$ for 24 lbs). I know they have some weight reduction foods but I haven't looked into that brand for small breed bites. If you are still needing digestive support after the switch this may be one to look at. Lilah has actually done really well on royal canin and they have a pretty amazing amount of research that they participate in as a brand, their long standing reputation has a little more to it than is sometimes recognized. For my girl after some long term eating struggles it was really a godsend. We have not historically done well on grain free diets but we are currently having success with natural balance duck and potato. Good luck with your dog food search!

2+2=4 X the Love ♥ Donating Member | Update: Well its been eight and a half months since the change and they are doing Great. Do to the high cost of the new senior food we decided to do half & half of the new 4 Health brand and Pedigree. They no longer beg for second helpings. Their weight is good, they have both lost weight and we've managed to keep it at a healthy level and the best part was that there was NO digestive issues while making the change. Yay !!! We did run into some issues early on with my son not letting me know when we have run out of the senior food and would feed them only Pedigree. I was noticing that they would beg for more food and they would start gaining weight. When I asked how much food was left and sure enough we were out. According to him week prior. So now I premix the food so that that no longer happens. Overall I am very pleased with the new food and the results !! Both pups will soon be senior pups.... Quincy just turned 14 on June 6th and Ruby Bella turns 7 on Aug. 5th.
