Worried...Puppy at Petsmart before vaccines were completed I have a question that I hope you can help me with. My 10 week old puppy has had 2 sets of shots (5 weeks and 7 weeks). Yesterday, I took her to Petsmart without thinking anything of it and let her walk around. Well now, I'm worried that since she hasn't had all of her puppy shots that shes going to catch something. It honestly didn't even cross my mind that it was risky until it was too late. I'm scared to death now Should I be worried or should she be protected enough with the two that shes had so far?

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | Yes, it's the walking around that could be problematic, carrying would be okay. Hopefully, everyone cleaned up any messes and so she wasn't exposed to any urine or feces. Remember that two weeks after a shot they are more vulnerable, so be careful until two weeks after the final 16 week shots. Who's giving the shots?

Petsmart I am no expert on vaccine regimens, but I would not care to take a young pup into a pet store. If I take my adult dog in, I always carry him or put him on a clean towel in the basket. I once was taking my dog into a Petsmart, had my dog on a leash outside the door and he wanted to go up to another leashed dog who was also outside on the sidewalk. I asked the dog owner if it was ok, and she replied 'well perhaps you had better not do so as my dog has Parvo' aaaaargh!!! She had the dog outside on the ground and had I not asked, she probably would not have stopped my dog from contacting hers! I was so upset as I wondered if the dog had been wandering inside the store, so I went in and asked the manager to get that sick dog away from the area!! So you never know what disease is wandering around or on the floors. Some owners have no brains and allow sick dogs to go into stores!

The shots were started too early on this puppy. You dont start vaccinations on puppies until at least 8 weeks of age....before that time, mothers natural immunity is still in the puppy and you have to hit the ideal tiome when mommas natural immunity to the puppy has waned enough to protect the puppy....that is not until 8 weeks of age. Those vaccinations that puppy got were given way too early to be beneficial to the puppy. First vaccines should start at 8 weeks then one vaccine given every 3-4 weeks from that initial dose, NOT in order to get a total amount of 3-4 vaccinations into the puppy, but they are given at those intervals as you try to hit the minute that puppy's maternal immunity drops down low enough for vaccines to be effective on the baby. Dog parks, PetSmart, walking trails, etc., any where all kinds of dogs with unknown vaccination protection are allowed to walk around, is NO place for a tiny puppy, and you indeed have cause for concern. Please, keep this baby isolated in your home, away from any other dogs, until this baby is properly and effectively vaccinated, or you will indeed loose your baby to parvo probably, since that is the most prevalent and most easily caught of the canine diseases.....Hopefully, you have a vet that is giving this baby vaccinations at the correct age in order to protect the baby. Vaccinations given when the maternal protections are still in the baby's system, are just thrown off and offer no immunity or protection.

I agree that her shots were given too early. The breeder that I bought her from gave them to her. I only got her a few days ago. She has an appointment with my vet on Wednesday to get her 12 week shots. I'm so mad at myself for taking her into Petco. The risk honestly didn't even cross my mind until I was driving home and then it was instant fear and regret. She will not be leaving my house (unless a vet trip) again until after 16 weeks. I'm scared to death that she is going to get sick I'm keeping a close eye on her.
