| Spaying a tiny girl question Trinket is 9 1/2 months and right at 2.5 lbs. She fluxuates between 2 lbs 6 oz and 2 lbs 8 oz. She is still a very skinny girl and I do not even believe she has had a heat cycle yet? The reason I say I am not sure is she has not acted like My Chihuahua when she had her first heat cycle which was at 11 months old. She is also a tiny girl. I am not as familiar with girls as I am boys. My question is should I weight for her to fill out? She is just so skinny. I always do pre blood work, etc... but I dont know for some reason I am just a bit worried with her and her weight. Also at what age do they start to fill out? |

| Are you restricting her food, or feeding her "just" a small portion daily, once a day or twice a day. My vet always suggests these tiny babies weigh 3 lbs.....but, she may not ever "fill out" ....that might be as big as she is going to get. Is she "skinny" or is she just a tiny dog? If she is "skinny" and you cant get weight on her, I would be questioning what is the reason for that. Usually, more calories/more food intake= weight gain. As far as the heat cycle goes, if she is not in danger of getting mixed in with an intact male, I would concentrate on her gaining some weight and let her have her first heat cycle, then consider spaying. She may be having some hormone issues with her size being so small....I had "a breeder" that never got over 3.5 lbs and was almost 14 months old before she came into season. Well, it was clear by the time she was 8 months old, she was very likely never going to hit the best weight for a "breeder"....so I quit concentrating on that thought, and started focusing on hormone issues....as it turned out, she had only one ovary and it was only 1/3 the size it should have been. I would say you need to determine if she is "skinny" or is this her little bitty body build. If she is skinny, why is she not gaining weight? Her diminutive size could be hormone related, which is going to throw off her cycles, etc. If she is just an itty bitty baby girl, I would let her gain more weight, up to 3 lbs, before I worried about spaying....there are many, many vets that are quite capable of spaying these little bitty kiddos, but it just scares the heebie-jeebies out of me! Her having one heat cycle before spaying is NOT going to hurt her. |

| My vet is very good at small animals, he spayed my tiny chihuahua at 2 lbs and she is 2.5 now but build is different and is smaller than Trinket. I had asked in here before about her being on the skinny side and a coupe of people said some are just like that and theirs were so I have not really put much thought into it. They get fed twice a day with treats in between (treats are coconut treats and green tripe treats) and I feed her more food than the others. She is on a pre-made RAW diet. I have been giving her a bit more each feeding hoping to put some weight on her. She is a small girl but she is still skinny as well. Oh and my boys are neutered and she is not around any other dogs usually and if she is she is usually in a sling or stroller so no chance of her getting in trouble ;-) I may just have a blood panel run on her to check things out if you think that would be helpful? |

| Does your vet think she is "skinny" or just tiny? I would tell him I am concerned why she is late with her heat cycle, why she is "skinny" and wont /cant gain weight, and see if he suggests any specific lab work., like thyroid or other hormone tests... When you get off into the weeds with specific blood work, it can get pricey......you go looking under all the rocks, and you may not even have a real issue except she needs more food/calories!.....and there may be absolutely NOTHING wrong! If she is indeed "skinny", she may need to eat more calories to gain weight...either more food, more feedings, supplements, etc. As she gets larger, she may have her cycle....it may just be a weight thing....kind of like an anorexic woman will have cycle issues.... | Our cassie was tiny like that....she weighed 2 1/2# when we had her spayed...she was almost 2 years old. She didn't go into her first heat until she was just over a year old. She was a chihuahua mix...I was petrified to have her spayed because she was so tiny! But I had started working as a vet tech and my boss guilted me into having her spayed haha .... being the tech assisting on her spay was an advantage I had....I would definately try to find a vet that specializes in very small animals if at all possible!

| Thanks, I will take her in and see what he says. She has not seen him since her rabies vaccination that was given I believe when she was 5 months old |

| Yes, always check with your vet for correct time and weight when it comes to spaying or neutering.
