| Help. Princess refuses to eat everything I got my little princess about a week ago. She is 10 weeks old teacup yorkie. When we got her from the breeder, they have us the list of food that they were giving her. But when we went to the petsco to get her food, the guy there told us that it was a very unhealthy food and that we shouldn't be giving it to her and also that they stopped carrying it in the store because it was so unhealthy . It was purina puppy chow and Cesars wet puppy food. He also said that she should be off the wet food by now. So we only got another ( healthier ) puppy kibble. We brought her home, obviously she was shy and sacred, she didn't eat right away. But in the morning she did eat her food and was pooping normal. But gradually she stopped eating the kibble and would only eat it if id soak it and moisten it for her. She seemed fine and playful. On the fourth day, she had her breakfast in the morning and after sometime she had an episode of vomiting. After that she completely refused to eat and drink. I got very concerned since her energy level was zero. I took her to the emergency, the vet saw her and said that her heart and lungs sound good- a good sign. Then she tried giving her a cookie but princess didn't eat it. I told her she likes soft food better so the vet brough Gerber baby food, chicken and chicken gravy, as soon as she opened it, poor princess sped to her and start licking the food ( since she hadn't eaten anything since the morning ). The vet suggested that we do the parvo test lists in case. Thankfully it came back negative. I brought her home. And tried feeding her puppy food but again she refused. So I had to go bring the Gerber chicken and chicken gravy. She ate that. For next meal I mixed some crushed kibble in the Gerber food and fed her. She didn't really like it either. I tried feeding she the other soft food with beef and gravy and she only licked the gravy and left the chunks. Afterwards, I blended the whole thing and have it to her and she finished I happily. But since yesterday I noticed she has diarrhea 😞 she is only eating the Gerber food now. Not even bothering about anything else. I tried mixing the kibble again and she licked of the baby food and left the chunks 😞 Right now, she seems fine. Like happy and playful when is up and taking her naps and sleeping properly but she still has diarrhea and she is only eating the Gerber baby food. I know diarrhea could be because of sudden food changes but how do I make her eat the other food? Oh and also, I was so scared that I went to get her breeder's food, both wet and dry at 5 in the morning today that maybe she will eat it but she only had it a little and not keen in eating it either. So all day today she had Gerber food. I'm sorry for the all detail but she is my first dog pet and I'm very scared and want to do what's best for her. I'd really appreciate some guidance about what I should do to make her eat regular food and get rid of her diarrhea 😞 |

| The food she was on is not good but it is also hard on them to switch suddenly. Usually a breeder will send you home with a little bit so you can switch over gradually. What food are you feeding now? You may at least mix on some Cesar's even though it's not the best, just to get her to eat then slowly give her less and less. Yorkies are notoriously picky and have very sensitive stomach, prefect recipe for tummy troubles. Make sure she is staying hydrated too, these little ones can dehydrate quickly. Good luck.

| She may need to go to the vet to help get her tummy straightened out. This will not happen on its own,she is tiny. Her tummy propably hurts from all of the changes in her diet. As for wet food, my 3 1/2yr,1yr and 8month old pups eat wet mixed with their kibble. Many small dogs do this. Sometimes I mix boiled chicken in with the kibble as well. With a very young pups any diet change needs to be made very slowly. Remember that this is a baby and will continue to be a baby until at least one year of age. |

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | Unforch, I think you need to return to the vet to get something for her tummy, and possibly do a fecal test. On the morning you go to the vet, take a plastic bag and put some of her poo in there, then double bag it and bring it to the vet so they can test it. If I were you and she was eating the gerber, I guess I'd probably be mixing the kibble in w/ the gerber like you've tried and keep doing that - putting less and less Gerber in each time. Another thing you may want to try is sprinkling Parmesan cheese (the powder in the green can) on her kibble. Parm is nice and pungent and can tempt dogs into eating, so def try this. You've got to stop the diarrhea though bc it will dehydrate her, so you may need something from the vet for this.

| Winnie had bad diarrhea when she came home...while she ate really well (she was weaned on blue buffalo and that's what I bought for her as well) she had awful awful diarrhea. She saw the vet the day after she came home and her fecal was negative...the vet put her on purina fortiflora. It's a probiotic. She would Lick it off the food first so she really likes it. And it cleared up her diarrhea the next day. She isn't on the BB anymore because it was too much protein and if she wasn't getting the fortiflora she had soft poo. She recently ate a mushroom which made her sick and required an emergency vet visit. She's been on bland diet (hills i/d) fortiflora and was on antibiotics but is done with them now. She has had the most normal poops I have seen from her in the 7 weeks we have had her. We will start introducing her new kibble this weekend. I would say either take her to the vet and see if since her food was switched quickly you could maybe try a bland diet and some probiotics for a few days and get her diarrhea cleared up and then introduce her new food slowly....or at least call....I know our vet is very good about talking to me about things over the phone and if she feels I need to bring her in she will tell me. I hope your baby is feeling better soon....it's very stressful the first few weeks isn't it??!! |
