| Warning about Buying Heartworm Preventative Online I was curious because I buy my sentinel from my vet and I can purchase it from Drs Foster and Smith at a yearly savings of 70.00 . I had always heard that if you buy your HW meds online that it voided the company warranty (in the odd case your dog became HW positive while taking meds). I called Novartis and this is what the representative told me. "We do not sell our products to any online vendor, so we do not honor our warranty unless you purchase from your vet." Hmmmm...makes you wonder where these online companies buy their products. So long story short, if you buy online and God forbid your baby tests positive for HW the company will not cover any treatments.

| I have been told that buy a few vet techs but it's great information for those who don't know.

| I thought it would be covered because the company is owned by vets. They offer their own guarantee about heart worm, but that would make me uncomfortable. I purchase my heart worm medications from my vet. I had heard in the past they would be covered by Dr. Foster and Smith, but maybe they were talking about their own guarantee. Thanks for pointing this out. Dr. Foster & Dr. Smith will personally guarantee our prescription heartworm preventives

| This is one article explaining how this "gray market" operates. Millions of dollars are at stake so some veterinarians are solicited to order mass quantities of the products and then sell the excess products to a broker or some of the very companies who manufacture the products are selling to people who shouldn't have access to them. This article is mainly talking about Frontline but it's the same concept for heartworm products. It's quite an interesting read.... Veterinarian investigates illicit diversion of flea products - VIN

For my own peace of mind I want the drug company warranty over a website warranty.

| Thanks, good to know. $70 over the span of a year is a pretty big difference. My vet is less than $10/year/dog difference from F&S.

| My vet does not mark up meds and flea and heartworm preventatives because she would rather people purchased from her for their pet's protection. I wish all vets were like that.

| I think the low cost my vet charges for visits and procedures offsets the price of meds. We are a rural area and he doesn't order large quantities so I am Sure that has a lot to do with pricing, but that's just a guess on my part.

| I like getting the heartworm and flea and tick preventative as it's so convenient. I can drop by when I'm out or only have a months worth left and pick up more. If I has to be signed for that's even more of a negative for me.

I just compared the price I pay for Heartgard Plus at the vet to Drs Foster and Smith and it is the same. Our bill is always higher though because Max and Teddy throw in a bag of CET chews.
