I just checked into this, and I agree with the Skeptvet. This is not a real study, and has certainly not been published. I followed all the information and clues provided by the press release, and they led nowhere. If the author did do a presentation at the 14th Annual AAVN Clinical Nutrition & Research Symposium, it was done as a poster and not an oral presentation, since he was not on their list of scheduled speakers. We'll have to see if this "study" is ever published anywhere, but I'm not holding my breath...

Yes, the vendors are all set up with displays and free samples at Symposiums trying to catch the attention of their targeted audience. I have attended/worked these types of meeting with my former employer at a booth. It's all about sell, sell, sell......they even utilized a PR news release similar to the OPer commercial.

It's great to have you as a member of this site to help us differentiate the true science from commercial gimmicks that we can all fall into with our inexperience. Thanks Phil for helping back up the facts that this is a promotional piece for the JustDogFood company. I wonder who their tent was they was set up next to.....would have like to be a fly on that wall. It's a ruff (pun intended) world in the dog food industry!

Yep, I bet it was a poster as there is NO way a symposium/conference of this nature would ever accept a speaker based upon where this info came from. When I worked at Medtronic, we did a ton of posters of a scientific nature and even those can be tough to get accepted (of course, it's the cardio field where things are probably more stringent than the animal world). And then they probably had a booth like any other vendor, small or large, where they further promoted their, um, "findings".

Frankly, I'd be rather embarrassed to purport these findings at any remotely scientific venue, bc of the nature of the attendees and the subsequent expectation of the scientific method. You'd likely end up a deer in the headlights thinking "oopsie".

Yup...for 7 years. With you being in the OR, I'm sure you're familiar! I worked in the cardio area...mainly defibs, pacemakers, leads. First in the field (ie, had a territory), then moved to world HQ for the next 4 years....which sorta reminded me of high school (the corporate world) .

I don't understand how this JustFoodforDogs is considered a new concept. Isn't Freshpet the same thing?

JustFoodforDogs cites the food recalls as an argument against kibble/canned. Why would their food be immune to potential problems? Freshpet had a recall.

As Skeptivet points out, even whole foods at the grocery store are subject to problems, like salmonella. All food is "processed' unless eaten right at the source, off the ground.

It's true that the "system" is where the problem lies and one of the reasons why buying local and knowing your farmer is a good thing. Healthy animals are at the core of good and safe food but if someone is handling it and transporting it, then it isn't immune to potential pathogens.
