| We treatments are necessary on first vet visit? I am about to take my new yorkie to his first vet visit with me as his new owner. Seems like the previous owner never took him the vet after getting him at like 7 weeks old. So his first year vet check is about to come up. What things does he need whiles he's there? I don't want to be suckered into unnecessary treatments. What do you think about the monthly thing that they offer at petsmart? How to avoid up sales? |

| Insurance is great for illnesses, but not a plan like Banfield where you are stuck with one (sometimes incompetent) vet. Check Embrace, HeathyPaws, PetPlan, etc. The one year visit should include: Rabies DHPP A discussion about vaccinating for lepto (risk of disease vs. risk of severe reaction from vaccine and the current research surrounding effectiveness of vaccine). Heartworm test with a year's supply of meds. Flea and tick meds if you use them. Fecal You don't have to give all vaccines in the same day. Wellness bloodwork is not always recommended for young, healthy dogs, but it should be done as well as a urinalysis.

| I don't like Banfield/Petsmart personally. I've heard lots of bad things. Has he NEVER been to the vet? Like, did he even get puppy shots? I'm very minimalist when it comes to vaccines. I try to follow Dr. Dodd's vaccine protocol for the most part. BUT, I very much believe in those initial puppy shots (DHP) and a booster at one year. Of course, rabies is required by law, usually every 3 years so that's important. They're initially usually given rabies between 4-6 months. Then boostered again a year later. Then thereafter, it's every 3yrs. I wouldn't let them talk you into lyme, lepto, bordatella, flu, etc. Any vet that recommends yearly vaccinations... I wouldn't touch. Heartworm meds monthly is important (i.e. Heartguard Plus). I get a prescription from the vet and order from DrsFosterandSmith online for a 12 month supply. Flea/tick treatments are dependent on the area. I use K9 Advantix in the summer months. I think bloodwork is not a bad idea. Most vets probably wouldn't include it for a basic yearly checkup (unless they're going under, for neuter, teeth cleaning, etc), BUT, if I could do anything different, I would've done it so I had a 'base' to go off of. Some vets are very pushy with foods, others are not. I wouldn't necessarily go out and buy a bag of food a vet recommends, but I wouldn't bypass them either. There's a lot of mumbo jumbo out on the internet about how all vets are out to get you. It's not usually the case, but of course, like in any profession, there will be bad apples that ruin it for the rest. Good luck, let us know if you need any more info
