| How to tell if they're in pain? Little Billi had surgery yesterday- spay, chip & 7 teeth pulled. Gosh, it's really hard seeing her in pain & uncomfortable. It took a while to get her to drink/eat & the little thing slept most of the evening after I got her home. The look in her eyes just breaks my heart! The vet tech went over all of her post-op instructions and medications- 1 of them being her pain medicine (I think Metacam) and said to give her a dose if she is in pain. How can I tell if she's in pain tho? I asked her just that, and she just said at the very least then give her the dose at night. She does this heartbreaking little whimper when she's resting, but she can be a little dramatic. She'll yelp if you pick her up in a way she doesn't like. So how can I really tell if she's in pain? I don't want her suffering at all, but hate to have her doped up, either! Thanks in advance for any input

| Aww poor baby, she sounds how Peanut was.. It’s so hard seeing them like that. I would just give her the dose of her pain meds today and tonight. Tomorrow you can see how she is acting and go from there.

| Poor Billi...I'm not familiar w/metacam, our vet always prescribes torbutrol or something like that. It makes them look like zombies lollll, they just stand there & stare blankly out into doggy space. It also made them pant, so I got scared & only gave it to them the 1st night home & the next morning & day, that's it. I called my vet & he said that should be fine. Maybe give your vet a call?

| Poor Billi girl. If she is whimpering, I would go ahead and give her the med. Metacam is an NSAID, so you aren't doping her up. Crying, shaking, hiding, or wanting to be held more than usual are common signs of pain. Hope she feels better this evening and tomorrow.

Max had Rimadyl, which is more controversial, when he was neutered and had eye surgery. I was reluctant to give it, but I didn't want him to suffer, and he did fine with it.

| Awesome info, ladies! Gosh, I just love this site! She's definitely a bit more snuggly & funny you mention it Mimi, she'd stand up every hour or so last night & just stand there like she forgot what she got up for & then after a few minutes she'd lay down. I've been like that after surgery so it was sorta sweet seeing her do that too. She got a lot of rubs and love through it. She's still drowsy today & whimpery, so I think I'll give her a small dose when I get home in a couple hours and go from there. Thanks again

| Poor baby, I'm sure she's uncomfortable at the least. I would err on the side of caution, and give her the meds as prescribed for a couple of days. Just like when we have surgery, they say don't wait until the pain gets away from you to take meds, it's harder to control it that way.

| In this case it doesn't matter if pain isnoticeable. She had major abdominal surgery. She is in pain. All spays should be medicated.

| It's been a week since my baby got spayed. She was in pain for two days and is ready to play on the third day. Lol. We have to say no to her. She walks around house with toys in her mouth whining. Silly girl. Hope Billi is feeling better.
