Sad How to tell if they're in pain?

Little Billi had surgery yesterday- spay, chip & 7 teeth pulled. Gosh, it's really hard seeing her in pain & uncomfortable. It took a while to get her to drink/eat & the little thing slept most of the evening after I got her home. The look in her eyes just breaks my heart!

The vet tech went over all of her post-op instructions and medications- 1 of them being her pain medicine (I think Metacam) and said to give her a dose if she is in pain. How can I tell if she's in pain tho? I asked her just that, and she just said at the very least then give her the dose at night.

She does this heartbreaking little whimper when she's resting, but she can be a little dramatic. She'll yelp if you pick her up in a way she doesn't like. So how can I really tell if she's in pain? I don't want her suffering at all, but hate to have her doped up, either!

Thanks in advance for any input
