| Bad allergies Chachi has chewed several places on his back. It started with one area and we took him to the vet. The vet said he had allergies and gave him a shot and some meds. We have been treating him at home and this has gotten worse not better. Now his whole back has chew areas on it and he looks real bad. My vet says these are hot spots. I am gonna take him back to the vet but wondered if anyone else has had this problem and what did they do about it.

| Oh I'm sorry....was hoping to hear good news! My sister has had the same trouble with her Scotty and she has tried everything too...all different kinds of meds...different diets...numerous tests and vet visits...her poor dog is miserable a lot of the time I think he is on a vegetarian dog food now along with some kind of medicine that is helping some though....I'll try to remember and ask her exactly what it is when I see her in the morning and let you know!

| Thanks I appreciate it. Were at wits end with this. They gave us an antibiotic and a spray med to put on him and he has just gotten worse. I read a post form someone else that said their dog had to go in for allergy shots once a month. If that is what they need to do I wish he would just do it. Chachi looks awful. Hes going to the vet on Thursday.

| Willy gets seasonal allergies, He chews his feet & belly & scratches his little head like crazy. We started by giving him Benedryl caplets at first they worked ok,and we also changed his food, but it progressively got worse. Now when that time of the year hits he ends up on Prednisone(?sp), thankfully his allergies are seasonal as the vet doesn't want him on it long term. My mom had a cockapoo,Dafne, with very bad allergies, Daf alway had her poor feet chewed almost raw, and she had a hot spot or 2 on her back. Mom tried everything, food changes, benedryl, herbal remedies, meds from the vet, shampoos, etc. Mom just got to the piont that she just tried to make her comfortable and a little less itchy. Good luck with Chachi, hopefully you can find something to make him more comfortable, Bless his little heart... Des |

| Have you consulted a homeopathic vet? Sometimes they have remedies that the western vets don't. I hope you find a solution. |

| We dont have any homeopathic vets I wish we did. I am afraid he gonna be put on some funky medication or shots that affect him in other ways. It is really bad and there gonna have to do more than just put him on an antibiotic.

| Many dogs have food allergies. Some of the most common allergins are: corn, wheat, oats and eggs. Most dog foods (even premium ones) have corn, wheat and/or oats. You might try a dog food like Innova Evo that does not contain grain products and see if it helps. In the meantime, your vet should be able to prescribe a medication to help with the itching before Chachi completely ruins her coat. Fleas allergies could also be a possibility. If a dog is severely allergic to fleas, it only takes one to do a great deal of damage. |

| Does your dog take chewable heartworm med? One of my yorkies has really bad allergy problems. She's allergic to beef & airborn allergy. Changed her to HA dog food (only) for over a year & she was getting prednisone shots monthly. That almost killed her. Changed vets & she got cleared up with antibiotics, & winged off the pred. The small dosage of beef in the heartworm med. was keeping her allergy flared up. The airborn allergy is still a small problem but nothing compared to the beef allergy from the heartworm med. that isn't listed in the ingredients & the other vet. kept prescribing. |

| Chaci, I have posted in the past that I subscribe to Tufts University School of Veterinary Medicine Newsletter for the caring dog owner which I think is excellent for the lay person. This months issue discussed "It's the age of Specialists" and listed websites to find specialists. Reading your post made me remember this article so I looked up Dermatology. This is the website for Dermatology and it might be helpful for you: www.acvd.org Let me know your thoughts after you go to the website.

| Thanks for the website. I have found a canine dermatologist in Indianapolis not too far from my house. When my Husband gets home I am going to talkt to him but I am sure chachi will be going there. Thanks again it was a very informative website. Chachi almost looks as bad as the dog in the opening picture. He is really in need of care.
