| Spay/Neuter Weight or Age? When should a puppy be spayed/neutered? Does it depend on its age or weight? Thanks, Pam |

| The most important thing is developmental age. It is best if the growth plates in the legs have closed before the spay/neuter--this is usually completed by 7 or 8 months. This could help alleviate potential leg and joint problems down the road. For a male puppy, you can wait longer, provided he is not around females who are in heat. For a female, if she goes through her first heat before you have her spayed, wait until the heat is over, and be sure to keep her away from unneutered males during that time. |

| As Phil just stated, it's best to wait for the growth plates to close. If a female goes into her first heat, you need to wait for approximately two months before she can be spayed. I also preferred to wait because I had retained baby teeth pulled at the same time as a spay, and it meant less teeth needed to be pulled. Here is a link to an informative pdf. There are many other vets who support his findings. http://www.caninesports.com/uploads/...tions_2013.pdf
