The most important thing is developmental age. It is best if the growth plates in the legs have closed before the spay/neuter--this is usually completed by 7 or 8 months. This could help alleviate potential leg and joint problems down the road. For a male puppy, you can wait longer, provided he is not around females who are in heat. For a female, if she goes through her first heat before you have her spayed, wait until the heat is over, and be sure to keep her away from unneutered males during that time.
