| Vaccinations & Tests; what's neccessary, what isnt? Hello, I have two 3.5 lbs females, 9 years old. They are indoor dogs due to coyotes, hawks, etc. in my area. Plus, they don't really enjoy being outside. We live in Texas. They hardly ever get boarded, and travel with me just about everywhere I go. My questions is, based on the background information above, what shots, vaccinations, etc. should I give them, and what is unnecessary? For example, I think bordetella is unnecessary unless they are being boarded or play with other dogs (I make sure their bordetella is up to date on the rare occation that they are boarded. They play with each other, not other dogs). Anything else unnecessary that I can cut out? Currently we do: Rabies -3 year vaccine Heartworm test - yearly Annual exam- yearly fecal matter test? - yearly Dentals - yearly Frontline- every other month Heartworm pill - every month Bordetella - as needed Thanks! |

| Sounds like you're doing good to me! I do pretty much the same schedule- except I don't do a dental yearly unless it's needed. My boy just had his 2nd and I am promising myself to keep up with his teeth this time so hopefully it's at least 4-5+ more years before needing another... but lots of pups definitely do need yearly! I only apply flea/tick meds topically in the summer. I don't apply any from approx October - March unless I begin to see a lot of ticks. I follow Dr. Dodd's protocol for vaccines.

| We don't follow Dodds protocol for anything. We follow established AAHA guidelines for core vaccines (every three years). We follow state law for rabies. We administer heart work prevention monthly We use flea and tick medications seasonally We test annually for heart worm and tick borne diseases We do fecal exams only when warranted for symptoms We do labs - blood and urine - at least once a year but most of the time at least twice We do dental cleanings when warranted. Just to note: I have two dogs that are almost 13. I stopped their annual DHPP last year, and will stop on the younger ones after the age 7 shot. I did rabies on my 12 year olds this year and will do it again at 15 if they live that long, unless there is a medical waiver in my state at that time. I'll risk the shot over a quarantine in a state shelter.

| Its sounds pretty good but I do DAP every three years. I also feel dental's should only be done as needed not yearly.
