| Complications after a female Spay HI there: my female (5lbs) was spayed on Jan 29th 2013 by my breeder's vet. She is a slender dog, not much body fat. She developed a reaction to spay about 2 weeks later when she was then with me. Hard mass areas developed under the skin along the suture line and some inflammed areas as well. To make a long story short, my vet diagnosed the hard areas as "granulomas" which developed as a reaction to the internal sutures the prior vet used and that with time, these hard areas should dissolve and disappear. My dogs reaction to sutures used. I got both vets on the phone while I was there and it turns out that the surgey vet used #2 suture which is a thicke gauge than a # 3 or 4. My vet said "he did on nothing wrong" but that on such a small slender dog he would have used a thinner and smoother suture as in a 3 or 4. He"d use a #2 on a lab pup, for instance. Well, its almost been 2 months since she was spayed, the hard areas have gone away, but she is still getting on and off little inflammed areas externally which i keep putting neosporin on and trying to stop her licking there which makes it all worse. Has anyone had a similar experience? Thank You. There's nothing more my vet can really do...he said to call him whenever i need.

| sorry this happened. i dont have any advice to offer but wishing your baby a full recovery soon. do you have any onsies? i know others here have babies wear them after being spayed to help stop the licking but not have to wear a conehead collar.

| +1 on the onesie idea. I just cut a hole in the butt area, starting just above the edging so that the snaps remained. Cut the hole large enough so that the tail goes through the hole, and your girl will still be able to pee and poop without taking off the onesie. She won't be able to lick the incision, and the incision area will be protected from whatever she lays on. Here is a pic of what I did to the onesie:

| Spay THANK YOU FOR THE ONESIE IDEA AND PIC! SHE IS NEARLY HEALED, JUST WANTED TO KNOW IF ANYONE ELSE EXPERIENCED THIS SYNDROME OF A REACTION TO THE INTERNAL ABSORBABLE SUTURES....HAVE TO PICK UP A ONSIE AS DON'T HAVE ANYMORE...GOOD TO HAVE.

| I have never heard of this happening. I'm so sorry your little girl is going thru that and I'm happy to read that she's almost past it all. I'm betting some of the ones around here that work with rescues have come across this. I am sure they will post soon.

| When Callie was spayed I don't know what size the sutures were but it took a very very very long time for the eternal ones to dissolve and twice they ended up poking out of the incision and she ended up with an infection and had to go on antibiotics. Did your vet tell you to put the neosporin on it because sometimes neosporin can also trap germs in.
