| Sprain? I think my 7 year old yorkie might have sprained his leg. He wasn't even doing anything but standing and all of a sudden he held up his front left leg and started crying in pain. He lets me touch it and everything but since then he cries in pain every couple minutes. When I let him outside to potty he had a very hard time going down the two stairs. I feel so bad for him but I'm not sure if there is anything I can do to help him. Is it possible that he twisted or sprained it while standing up? And is there anything I should be doing to help him? Thank you!!! |

| He may have injured it earlier and the swelling/bleeding into the tissue just gotten to the point he could no longer hide his pain, as dogs frequently do. I would get him to a vet for pain relief. He could have a torn muscle or tendon detachment - the tendon could have avulsed from the bone even. On some of the injuries involving tendons detachments, surgical re-attachment is necessary and has to be done within a certain time frame - usually up to a certain amount of hours like 48 or something??? Anyway, the pain can be what is so bad - that and the debilitating nature of the injury if it is a tear or detachment. Of course, it could be a sprain or strain but if that baby is crying, he needs help from pain now. And likely stabilization/splinting/casting if no surgery required.

| I think you need to get him to the vet and have it checked out and get him some pain meds.

| Yeah he lets me touch his arm and I've looked it over and am now thinking that it's his shoulder possibly. I live in Williston, ND so it's still freezing cold and winter... So no bugs like that yet. And I've contacted my vet last night and he told me to give him half of a baby aspirin and to call him today if he's not better. As of 5 minutes ago he did walk to the back door and down the two steps to potty and came back in but I can still tell he's in pain. So I'll definitely be calling the vet this morning. breaks my heart to see him like this. Just wish I knew what happend. |
