He may have injured it earlier and the swelling/bleeding into the tissue just gotten to the point he could no longer hide his pain, as dogs frequently do. I would get him to a vet for pain relief. He could have a torn muscle or tendon detachment - the tendon could have avulsed from the bone even. On some of the injuries involving tendons detachments, surgical re-attachment is necessary and has to be done within a certain time frame - usually up to a certain amount of hours like 48 or something??? Anyway, the pain can be what is so bad - that and the debilitating nature of the injury if it is a tear or detachment. Of course, it could be a sprain or strain but if that baby is crying, he needs help from pain now. And likely stabilization/splinting/casting if no surgery required.
