| Archie developed a gagging hair ball cough Hi, I am new to this site. My name is Arieann and I have a 5&1/2 year old Yorkie named Archie. I started out as being a foster mom but didn't want him going from home to home so I adopted him and I am glad that I did. I love him dearly and he has brought alot of joy to our lives. Yesterday Archie got his teeth cleaned and our vet who is an awesome vet, had to pull 9 teeth. The problem that has started happening is that Archie has developed a horrible gagging hair ball cough over night. I have no idea what it is and if it keeps up I am going to take him back to the doctors. Does anybody have any suggestions as to what this could be? |

Donating YT 500 Club Member | I'm not sure if this will be accurate at all or not, but perhaps call your vet and ask if they put a tube down your pups throat. I know the first time Clyde went under anesthesia they put a tube down his throat and he had a horrible cough for two days afterwards because of all the irritation from the tube. I don't know much about vet procedure, but I assume that this is common practice? Or maybe your dog picked something up at the vets office? It is really hard to tell, but I would go ahead and call my vet and ask his or her advice as to what you should do. Oh! And by the way Welcome to YT!!!! I hope that you find an answer as to why your pup is coughing! Good luck Last edited by Clyde_Dexter; 02-22-2013 at 08:45 AM. |

| I don't want to frighten you, but Kennel Cough often sounds like the dog has something caught in their throat. Even though your dog is vaccinated for Kennel Cough, it's a virus that mutates just like flu viruses do, and vaccinations are not effective for all strains. There are alot of dogs in and out of vet's offices, and your baby might have gotten exposed to something there. We foster dogs, and mine dog caught it from one of the foster dogs. My vet said that it's not usually serious in an otherwise healthy, adult dog, and that it often goes away on its own if the dog has a good immune system. But she will also prescribe antibiotics since I wanted to be on the safe side. |

| cough Poor Archie, it is bad enough to have dentals and extractions without a nasty cough too. Usually they intubate and I know my dog had throat problems after dentals. Luckily that goes away fairly soon. I wonder if he could have symptoms of KC so soon after the vet visit, if he did contract it there? Perhaps a call to the vet would ease your mind? Get well soon Archie. |
