| This dentist seems to be very good. I'm going to watch it again and take notes! Ian is due to have a cleaning this year. I'm very nervous. '

. That's one of the many things I love about this site. My concerns are the anesthesia and the tube which is used to administer it. My first yorkie, Prince, passed from a collapsed trachea, and my family and I believe that the collapse was due to his dental. He never had any health problems before that.

| I have been working with Princess Sophie getting her used to having my finders in her mouth. This is most easy when she's a bit tired, when she's not so bitey. Tomorrow we introduce toothpaste. What fun!!! In my next post, when my fingers are all gone, you will all feel sorry for me right? LOL

| Thank you for posting the video. I can't get it to come up right now, but I am going to watch it later. Is the intubation different for a dental than for any other procedure? Is there something that makes it riskier during a dental?

| Wow! I had no idea how complex this procedure is. Wish I could this vet.

| I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | That's a good question, I have no idea of the answer. When I watched the video, I noticed they "blew up" the tube once it was in the throat. This created a bulb on the tube that prevented water getting into the lungs. During the cleaning they are using water in the mouth, and since this wouldn't be the case in most surgeries, I'm wondering if they always have that bulb. It seems like that bulb could do some damage. I'm just guessing on all this though.

| The bulb on the end of the ET tube is standard on all ET tubes used for humans and is deflated prior to removal to prevent damage. The amount of air in the cuff is also carefully regulated and is measured with a pressure regulator. One note, uncuffed tubes are used for small children due to a normal narrowing of the cricoid in children. I don't know if dogs have this, hence the cuffed tube, I guess.
