YT 2000 Club Member | Yeast infections.....grain free diet? Ok, so a while back, I posted about Teeka having the itches. Now, she has a funny smell in her ears. I called the vet and they think it could be a yeast infection. She has an appointment for next week. So I was reading online about yeast infections. It says that if a dog has sensitivities to grains they can have these same symptoms of itching, yeast infections in ears, frito smelling feet, etc. Has any one heard of this? I have her on a grain free food and treats. She gets no table food except fruit or veggies. I could use some input as my other yorkies never had any of these issues!

YT 2000 Club Member | She is on Blue Basics Grain Free dry......It lists Turkey and potato. It is the only puppy food. Even thought it is Wheat, corn and soy free, it has oatmeal and brown rice in it. Isn't there a food without any type of grain? I am going to have to talk with my vet as I am getting more and more confused about what to feed her and what not to feed her! This is the second food I have tried her on since we brought her home 3 months ago. I hate to keep switching her to a different food!

| Horizon Legacy has a very good puppy formula without any grains or potato. It may be hard to find though. You can order it online if you want. I know that petflow.com carries Horizon foods.

YT 2000 Club Member | I called PetSmart and they suggested to try Blue Freedom Grain Free, but it has potato in it. I know potato is a starch, but aren't sweet potatoes good for dogs? Since I just purchased 2 bags of food they said that I could return them even opened to try a different grain free. I need help deciding what Is best for Teeka. Help!!!!

| Grain free food and probiotics help tremendously. Our Boxer had chronic yeast infections until we started giving her both.

| I know that Nutrisca carries three different grain-free and potato-free formulas (salmon, chicken, and lamb). My local Whole Foods sells it as does the Pet Supermarket and maybe a couple of independent pet stores. Grain- AND potato-free can be tricky to find. |

| Its also good for you to know, it may not be food related at all But even if its not, feeding a grain and potato free food could help keep the symptoms from getting severe. But if its not food related, you will prob have to consider allergy testing. However, just dry itchy skin and infected ears doesnt always point toward allergy. Ear infection can be from too much hair in ears, or moisture from baths, swimming, etc. And dry itchy skin can simply be dry skin From the weather, or whatever just like people get dry skin. I hope your able to figure out what it is. Unfortunatly i have 2 dogs with allergy/ skin problems. Its a lifelong battle. |

| If your dog is suffering from yeast infections, you must eliminate sugary foods from their diet, as this is food for the yeasty bacteria. Princess had bad yeasty smelly itchy ears, where I had to clean brown gunk out of her ears every other day. No more store bought treats & her ears are clean! Eating These Foods Can Cause Dog Yeast Infection

| Great little article! And I was just thinking that the Nature's Variety Instinct line is also grain-free and potato-free with a few different LID formulas as well...it's probably also easier to find a store that sells this brand. Keep us updated! |

| The only bad things about Nature's Variety Instinct is that it has tapioka which is also pretty high on the glycemic index. Instinct is also pretty high in fat and protein.

| What type of probiotic do you use, where do you get it? All 5 of mine are on Blue Grain free and everyone is doing so well. Except the pom (almost 13yrs) has a yeasty smell in her ears. No infection, been to the vet 2 times to make sure. Ears are clean and culture free. The only other thing that I have been able to do that has helped a bit is to swab in her ears once a day with a white vinegar and water solution. I am open to other ideas. |

| My puppy had a secondary yeast infection from being on antibiotics for too long around 2.5 months and he had developed yest infection all over his body, legs, tail and ears and also lost all his hair. I read up on everything i could get my hands on so I started trying him on a low carb no sugar diet. I put him on stella & Chewies freeze dried and unpasteurized goats milk, bee propolis along with probiotics coconut oil orally and topically (where he had the yeast infection). Within a week he stopped itching and was growing back all his hair on his bald parts! looking at him now he has beautiful hair all over. The vet was amazed by his complete turn around. hope this helps
