| My New Puppies Coat I am not sure if this is the proper place to post this question but I am new here and have been searching all the posts for what I am looking for answers to and nothing has popped out at me. I just adopted a 14 week old baby named Brady and his hair is rather thin, long on his face and legs and his back is corse and puffy... I am taking him to the vet for check up and to complete his shots and will ask about that, but just wanting to see if I can find any further information that may help me. I think he needs a good grooming as his hair around his back area were a little matted. Is there a special brush I need? Is it that his coat is just wiry and it wont grow long? He just look a little ratty.. Sorry Brady!! Thank you for all your help. |

| Hello and WELCOME to YT! A good quality shampoo and conditioner may help his coat. How long have you had little Brady? I am still a new Yorkie mom as well, so I don't have much advice, but I am sure someone will be along shortly to help point you in the right direction. Again a BIG Welcome to you and Brady! Be sure to post a picture of your little man when you can!

| I just got my Brady on Sunday. He is crate trained and I am working with him on house training. He is a SWEET boy and full of energy! The first day we had him he was quiet and laid in my lap a lot but as of yesterday.. oh boy. My husband is home on vacation this week so he is helping with taking him out of the crate during the day but he travels a lot with his job and once he starts back to work Brady will have to stay in the crate for longer periods during the day. I am wondering if maybe he is just shedding his baby coat and things are changing. I have been reading that the coat doesnt really start to turn until they are older so I wonder if he is older than 14 weeks. The vet will tell me on Thursday when I go. |

| Welcome to YorkieTalk! It sounds as though your boy has a mixed coat- not too unusual from what I've been reading here on YT. My pup has a soft coat and I use a conditioning, oatmeal shampoo on him and just recently started using conditioner, too. For combs I have a rotating pin comb and a fine tooth rat-tail comb. I use a large toothbrush to comb the hair right by his eyes. My neighbors have a wiry hair female and her hair seems to have stopped growing at odd lengths, I'm not sure if that is "typical" for that coat type. I comb my boy, Blazer, every day and bathe him once a week usually. I clip his nails once or twice a week now (I was terrible about it at first!) and brush his teeth daily. I clip the hair on his ears now (I didn't touch them until a few weeks ago and he is almost 6 months now) I clip the hair on all of his "sanitary" areas and I clip the hair on his feet and legs- just to keep them cleaner looking. I haven't gone so far as to use clippers on him yet, but he did have his first groom around 3 months old.
