Welcome to YorkieTalk!
It sounds as though your boy has a mixed coat- not too unusual from what I've been reading here on YT.
My pup has a soft coat and I use a conditioning, oatmeal shampoo on him and just recently started using conditioner, too. For combs I have a rotating pin comb and a fine tooth rat-tail comb. I use a large toothbrush to comb the hair right by his eyes.
My neighbors have a wiry hair female and her hair seems to have stopped growing at odd lengths, I'm not sure if that is "typical" for that coat type.
I comb my boy, Blazer, every day and bathe him once a week usually. I clip his nails once or twice a week now (I was terrible about it at first!) and brush his teeth daily. I clip the hair on his ears now (I didn't touch them until a few weeks ago and he is almost 6 months now) I clip the hair on all of his "sanitary" areas and I clip the hair on his feet and legs- just to keep them cleaner looking. I haven't gone so far as to use clippers on him yet, but he did have his first groom around 3 months old.
