| Need help figuring this out Hi I was wondering if anyone has experienced this situation before or has advice. My 3yr yorkie Zeke has been making a hacking noise lately now this usually happens when he drinks water and then he hacks like theres something stuck in his throat I havent been concered about it since he has done this since he was a pup but lately he is doing it without drinking so now im thinking it might be something else going on.He is fine otherwise he still runs around 80 mph but this is concerning me.I would really appreciate any advice or help on this Thank you. |

| Yes I told the vet his problem and he said it might be because he is drinking to fast and that he wouldnt know for sure until he could go inside his throat and see.I have raised his bowls to see if that helped but he still does it and he is fine when he is running and after but ofcourse he goes to drink and hacks.Im considering taking him to the vet because he has been doing this for a few days now without drinking.I was concerned it could be tracheal collapse because I know yorkies are prone to this or its something else serious.Trying to figure this out because he acts normal. |

| When he hacks, have you looked into his mouth to see if anything is there? Momo gets dust & hair (I have long hair) on his fav ball & sometimes he accidentally swallows it. He'll hack like something is stuck on his throat & sometimes when I check his mouth, my hair is in there & I have to pull it out. loll I'm very anal about cleaning the floors everyday now, or every other day.

| He wouldn't have to look in his throat to know if it was collapsing trachea but that is what it sounds like it is to me but I am not a vet.

| My vet checks for collapsed trachea by touching their throat. A dog w/collapsed trachea will react by coughing or honking. Here's a great thread w/vids in the library: http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/die...d-trachea.html

| Thank you mimimomo for the link. The videos were very informative. It sounds more like kennel cough which makes sense because I did board him back in the middle of sept. he came home throwing up but no cough.I just thought it was an upset tummy either from stress or excitement.I put him on a bland diet and he was better.I would have never thought kennel cough because his shots are current and that was back in sept. Can he still have it from that time? I really appreciate all of you for you help. |

| Kennel cough can last a couple of months, in that case, it's very important to be checked by a vet bc kennel cough can lead to pneumonia. The hacking/coughing is more present during late night & early morning hours, sometimes accompanied w/runny nose or eyes. Kennel Cough: Symptoms, Treatments, Contagious, Causes, and More Since he's hacking after he drinks water & he's done this occasionally since he was a pup, I'm wondering if using a water bottle might help him? Walmart sells those bottles for rabbits, needs to be attached to a gate or x-pen. Mine use the water converters I sell & also have fresh clean water in a bowl, they can choose whichever way to drink. Acid reflux also makes them hack...

| Wow didn't know that.I have an appointment with the vet in the morning so I'm goin to test for everything to rule out something serious but I think it is kennel cough. Thanks I will try the bottle to see if that helps him because I really hate hearing him hacking it gives me a heart attack every time.Thank you mimimomo its always good to know someone is there to help you even when I think I know everything. |

| I know how alarming it is to hear them hack, Momo reverse sneezes a lot too esp after drinking or eating. I used to worry & had x-rays to see if he had collapsed trachea, even tho the vet tested by touching his throat & he was ok. Now, he knows the word 'swallow' & when I say it, he stops making those noises. If he doesn't, I go rub his nose & gently push it downwards to open his airway & it'll calm the spasm. I hope everything turns out ok. It's also very helpful if you can get it on video & show your vet...

| Oh yes the reverse sneeze is a nasty thing.I used to get on the floor with Zeke and coach him through it like "come on Zekie you can make it" I used to think he was dying lol. That is very unique that he stops when you say swallow so cute.Thank you and good idea about the video i'll do that. |
